How long does it take for a dog's coat to grow back?

Hi everyone,

My question is quite simple really. I’ve got a gorgeous little girl who's three and a half; she’s a cross between a Bichon and a Yorkie. I was thinking it might be a good idea to ask the groomer to clip her this summer so she doesn’t get too hot. It’s just a thought at the moment, I haven’t definitely decided to go ahead with it yet, I’m still thinking it over. So, my question is: does their hair grow back quickly? I’ve included a photo to give you an idea of her current coat length. When I went to the groomer's on Wednesday, I arrived 15 minutes early and she was clipping a little Yorkie. I thought it was a bit strange to have a dog clipped in winter, but anyway... For mine, it would be for the summer, but I’m hesitant because I really like her long hair. The groomer always tells me she has a beautiful, shiny, fine coat with a lovely parting down her back that makes it fall to both sides.

So, does anyone know how long it would take for her coat to get back to this length?

I love her long hair but I only want to do it for her sake, so she isn’t too hot. Last year we had a heatwave and I did my best to keep her in a cool spot; I’d dampen her back and head from time to time—more like stroking her with a wet hand—and of course, I changed her water frequently.

Many thanks in advance

I have a quick question: does the fur on a Brittany’s ears grow back quickly?

She had a bit of a mishap with her ears and had to have stitches. It’s all healed up well now and there wasn’t any necrosis, but I’m finding that the fur they had to clip is growing back really, really slowly. Is this normal? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

I brush mine three times a week—Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It’s become a bit of a ritual now; if I don’t do it, you can be sure she’ll end up with mats, and trying to get them out is a right nightmare as she absolutely hates it. I had an operation back in January and couldn't brush her for three weeks, so I ended up taking her to the groomer’s. They have all the proper professional combs, which was lucky as she’d developed a few knots in her armpits and behind her ears. Long-haired dogs definitely need a lot of upkeep! I also use a detangling shampoo—maybe give that a go, it might help you out.

I’ve got a Yorkie and I get her clipped every three or four months, except from November to March when I let it grow out.

She always gets all sorts of things stuck in her coat even when she’s clipped, so I can’t imagine her with a long coat!

    Here’s another little photo.

The Yorkie had been clipped but his tail was left long and his ears were trimmed in a bob; he looked much younger than his age.

Yes Enigue, I'll keep you updated and I'll put some photos up. Could you post a photo of your dog with a bob? I'm curious to see.

Right, my little girl has long fur and I get her a bob cut around her face—it's ever so cute. Keep me posted, won't you?

I’ve just been to look at puppy cuts for Yorkies and Bichons. Actually, they aren’t shaved; the hair is just cut quite short, and I much prefer that. I’m still going to have a think about it, though.
