Dog shivering / stomach gurgling

Hi everyone,

I have a little dog named Pixel, a small Yorkie-type dog who is less than a year old.

Recently, he's been having a gurgling stomach and has been very lethargic for 24-hour stretches. He won't eat or drink. Once that period passes, he's perfectly fine again.

After this happened a few times, I went to the vet. They told me it was colic and recommended this type of dry food (maybe there's another reason for it too):

He was on Friskies puppy food before that. No other tests or check-ups were done.

The vet felt his tummy and everything seemed fine, except for the lethargy, gurgling, and shivering.

We've been feeding him the new dry food for 4 or 5 days now, but his tummy was gurgling again this morning. But no shivering or anything else. Strange! ^^

Extra details: he also vomited twice in the morning last week, two days apart—yellow foam and then bile.

I'm the type of person who worries very easily.

If this happens again, should I head back to the vet and ask for some tests? Just so I can have it in black and white that nothing is wrong, or should I just get used to this?

Thanks in advance!

I’d recommend checking out a survey site, where you can easily exchange points for cash.

I reckon your dog might have worms. That’s likely why he’s been sick and can’t keep any food down. I’ve got a Poodle myself. He loves eating anything and everything he finds 😞, so he’s had similar symptoms. I took him along to the vet. He showed me a herbal worming treatment for small dogs under 33 lbs (around 2 stone 5). It’s only for small dogs, though. But just to be on the safe side, you should take your dog to the vet, or even get a second opinion from a different one.

I see what you mean, the grain content is definitely too high. It's a bit like with us humans—too many carbs aren't good! ^^

Thanks for your feedback, it’s always useful to get a second opinion.

The little girl I had before Tina had a gurgly tummy for most of her life; she would put herself on a fast and it would usually clear up by the next day. If it didn't, it was straight to the vet.

Tina hasn't had that issue since she was a pup, but I keep a close eye on her now because Jack Russells are prone to digestive problems.

Next time your dog has a flare-up, you could take them to a different vet to get a second opinion.

Sometimes it’s worth asking for a blood test, too.

Friskies is a brand of dry food that isn't very easy for dogs to digest because it's almost entirely made of cereals.

I’ve dealt with this kind of issue with one of my dogs, and he was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis. You should definitely have a chat about this with your vet. Diet can really help, alongside any medication, and raw feeding (BARF) might be a more natural and digestible option than commercial food—even the high-quality stuff—which your dog could be intolerant to.

I just wanted to make a quick observation. These tummy rumbles and stomach spasms—basically, these digestive issues—have only started recently. My dog didn’t have any of these problems before, and he’s less than a year old. Is it possible for this to just appear out of the blue, or could it be hiding something more serious? @Vero78280, for yours, has it been like this since birth?

Thank you for the replies, that's very kind.

So, I don't need to worry or go back to the vet then?

Regarding the transition for the dry food, if I go with the recommended brand, do you have a specific process for switching from one brand to another?

    Thanks

The best thing for your dog would be the BARF diet.

    http://www.tribu-carnivore.com/barfnew/

This is a natural raw diet.

It’s made up of raw meat, raw meaty bones, raw offal, raw fruit and veg, and oils or other natural supplements.

Friskies is a really poor quality brand; if you want to stick with dry food, I’d recommend Orijen, which you can find on Zooplus, or Power of Nature Meadowland Mix, which is available from a German site.

Right, thank you for getting back to me. --> "In his opinion, she'll regularly have an upset stomach." We were told the same thing as well 😞 Is Orijen a good brand? I've read that grain-free dry food is recommended and that we should prioritise dry food with a high meat content.

You should give them some Phosphaluvet (a gastric gel) for three days.

My dog regularly eats grass, specifically cat grass, and my vet told me it’s probably because she has an upset stomach. He suggested giving her regular courses of Phosphaluvet to help. In his opinion, she’s just prone to having a sensitive stomach quite often.

That said, my vet didn't ask me to change her food, but she is already on Orijen.
