Our Prudence (a Westie who is nearly 2) is suffering from incontinence...
She was spayed in December 2019 and she's been having leaks for a little while now.
She only has leaks after walks or after playing, never at night and never if she's been resting quietly.
The vet originally put her on Propalin, but there were no results even after 2 months.
He switched her over to Incurin 5 days ago, but no results so far...
I've read here and there that Incurin is supposed to work very quickly.
To anyone who is using it or has used it before, how long did it take for things to improve with the Incurin?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Urinary incontinence is a side effect of spaying that is unfortunately quite common in female dogs. Both Propalin and Incurin are medications used to help manage incontinence in female dogs. Incurin works by replacing the hormones produced by the ovaries that help maintain bladder control. However, the effective dose and how often it needs to be given varies from dog to dog. If you aren't seeing any improvement, do have a chat with your vet about potentially increasing the dose to find what works for her.
Taking away their water is a huge mistake. A dog needs to stay hydrated. It’s vital for their kidneys, but also for their digestive system, their coat, and even their cognitive function.
Hi there, my 11-year-old Cairn has started "wetting the bed" in her sleep at night. It started off once a week, then increased to two or three times... We didn't wait around to sort it. The vet prescribed Incurin—one tablet a day for 15 days, then one tablet every other day.
It was effective after just two or three days.
We give her the tablet in the evening just before her dinner (I hide it inside a very ripe date). We’re finishing the pack of 30 tonight, and I’ll be checking with the vet tomorrow about the next steps.
One thing to mention: my dog always wants to be outside, day and night, no matter the weather. We suspected that the cold at night might be a factor in her incontinence, even though the lowest temperature this winter has only been about 6°C at night, and not for very long (we’re in Nice); so now, we make her sleep indoors.
Secondly, she has her dinner once a day at about 6.30pm. We let her drink for five minutes afterwards, then we take the water away and bring her in before her 8pm walk—and that’s it until the morning. Since we’ve been doing all this, no more leaks!
So, there you have it!
I’d imagine a week is about average; it worked straight away for my girl, but it can take longer for others... she only has very mild incontinence and we started treatment as soon as the first leaks appeared, so I reckon it kicked in so quickly because we caught it right at the very start. Don’t lose hope! Any updates from your end?
No more leaks from the very next day??
I did some research this morning and read that it takes up to a week to kick in.
She had her 5th Incurin tablet this morning. We haven't been out for a walk yet, so I haven't been able to check today.
Yesterday (day 4), she was wet after her walk.
Every time she comes back from a walk, she drips. We’ve tried Propalin without any luck; if the Incurin doesn't work either, it’s going to be a real struggle...
Hi there,
Incurin worked straight away for my dog. She used to leak a few drops (without even realising it, and without even squatting) after coming back from long walks, so once a day there was always a little puddle of wee in the hallway.
Now she has one Incurin tablet every other day and we’ve had no more issues – it actually started working the very next day. Maybe it’s just not the right medication for Prudence, then...
Best of luck finding something that helps her!
Hi there, no, sorry, I really don't know what to suggest for your lovely Prudence...
I don’t know any female dogs who’ve dealt with incontinence after being spayed. I’ve heard of it happening, but I’ve never come across it personally (and I know dozens and dozens of spayed females in my neck of the woods...). It sounds like a real bit of bad luck, unfortunately...
Still no improvement today?
If the meds aren't helping, is it possible that it isn’t a medical issue?
