Hi everyone,
I've just had to rush my Staffie to the emergency vet due to heatstroke. Staffies have a problem with the back of their palate being too narrow.
After a lot of exertion, he couldn't get enough air and was literally suffocating. They cooled him down with cold water for 45 minutes and put him on steroids. He pulled through, but it was a very close call—he was on the brink of death. The vet told me that if it happens again, even without any exercise, there's an operation to widen his airways. This would help him regulate his temperature much better.
You should be aware that during heatstroke, a dog's brain can literally shut down.
Anyway, that’s what happened in our case.
Does she snore while she’s sleeping or after she’s been playing?
If it’s the former, it’s nothing to worry about—plenty of dogs snore when they’re asleep. However, if it’s after exercise, that isn’t normal. I’ve got an Amstaff; she’s like a Staffie but a bit bigger ^^. She’s never out of breath like a Bulldog. Your pup might have caught a cold, or she could even have a slight heart murmur. Anyway, you’ll be heading to the vet for her boosters soon, so mention it to them and they’ll be able to tell you what’s actually going on.
Did you get a health certificate when you bought her?
I know loads of Staffies and don't you worry, they snore, it's normal and it only gets worse as they get older :p
Mine is 4 months old and sometimes she wakes us up in the night snoring lol...
So there you go, everything's normal, no need to panic :)
In that case, get him to a vet quickly for a first check-up, just to make sure everything’s okay with him.
I’m not that familiar with Staffies myself. I’ve got a French Bulldog and she hardly ever snores.
Ok, thanks marjo38 and ewilan2610 for replying.
No, haven't been to the vet yet as I only got him yesterday
