For a few days now, I’ve noticed that my puppy—who is nearly 3 months old—has more and more small circular patches appearing in her fur. The skin underneath doesn’t look irritated and she isn’t scratching, but it’s starting to spread. Do you think it could be demodectic mange?
I’ve heard that aloe vera and even engine oil are good for that...
Here are some photos; sorry they’re a bit blurry, she just won’t sit still!

Hi there, I know these posts are quite old now, but did you ever get a diagnosis?
My girl has the same symptoms: bald patches, itching and a nasty smell. The vet told me it was ringworm, but it turned out it wasn't after three weeks of treatment. Since the problem was still there, we did a bacterial culture etc., but nothing came back from that either. So now they're suggesting a biopsy or seeing a canine dermatologist. I just don't know what to do anymore, my poor old girl never gets any peace.
Hi everyone,
So, I’ve just got back from the vet.
It’s nothing too serious as I’d already had the sense to give her a wash with some antibacterial soap and put her bedding and blankets through the washing machine. Most of the spots have cleared up, but the vet has prescribed a 20mg Simparica tablet (a flea and tick treatment) plus a medicated skin cream to be applied to the remaining spots every morning and night.
Thanks again to kelinda for the advice! 👍

Hi everyone, my dog is five months old and some little bald patches have started appearing in his coat. I thought it might be fleas or ticks, so I bought a flea collar, but he’s still scratching his back end and nibbling at himself.
Her vaccinations are up to date, but she’s due her final jab next week, so I’ll take the opportunity to ask the vet for a diagnosis regarding the bald patches. However, I’ve just noticed that before the white patch forms, there’s a small scab, and she’s often biting her back end. I’ve looked for fleas many times without any luck, but I finally spotted one today! Could it be related? She’s also got loads of tiny bumps under the fur on her head.
Hi there,
It’s hard to say exactly what it might be just from your photos. It’s really important to be able to examine the whole animal to figure out where the problem is coming from.
Demodectic mange often appears in young animals, and there are several different forms of it. You can certainly get patches of hair loss on the face, but usually, these areas are found around the eyes, and then on the paws and the belly. How long has this been going on? Is he scratching?
You should definitely go and see a vet if you find that the patches are spreading, as it’s important to carry out some tests (like skin scrapings or a tape strip test, for example). They might be able to spot parasites that way. This is especially important because if it is mange, the treatment can be very, very long and difficult. And unfortunately, there aren’t any natural treatments for it...
