Puppy humping people

Evening all. My dog Paco is 4 months old and has started mounting my girlfriend and my mum, basically trying to hump them. There's some discharge at the end of his penis. How do I stop this and make him understand it's not allowed? Thanks for your replies.

Mine’s exactly the same (an eighteen-month-old spayed Maltese); she gets all worked up on her bed when I’m watching the telly around 6 pm... I reckon in her case, it’s definitely an attention-seeking thing.

Personally, I don’t see the funny side... She’s ruining her bed; she’s the first one I’ve had who’s done this! And when I have a moan about her mattress and all her antics, she just flips it over to give it a shake... then lies down... Oxane has her evening walk and her last trip out to the garden around midnight... her "performance" usually starts while we're watching a film... During the film... Is it because she feels she’s not getting enough attention? She’s certainly got a mind of her own, that little one; it's probably just her way of getting noticed since she knows it gets a rise out of you! 😁

I don’t think it’s particularly healthy to let him get all worked up over a toy or a cushion. I’d definitely recommend redirecting him towards something calm or a game that doesn’t leave any room for doubt...

It’s strange, none of my dogs have ever really done that kind of humping... Neutered or not, they never mount others, apart from a few exceptions (Loutchik being "in love" with a neutered male, for one, and Sirius once because of a female dog who came to the house, who was probably about to go into season). Even Berger, who gets over-excited easily, doesn't have that ritual?

Same here, my Lab Oxane does that too – she "humps" her bed every night before going to sleep... It’s been the same ritual for a few months now. As @Patou says, "I have my doubts about that cushion" ^^ I even took her bed away to get some peace and quiet before she was spayed (she was having a phantom pregnancy) and I thought she’d be less hyper after her spay, but no, it’s just the same...

When my dog is feeling a bit hyper (not in a bad way), she asks for her towel so she can 'hump' it ^^ When she was younger, she used to have her mad half-hour and tear all over the place, but at her age, she prefers getting worked up over her tea towel ^^

Dogs and puppies don’t always display sexual behaviours purely for breeding purposes. Frustration or stress can often lead to this kind of overexcitement. At his age, your puppy is still discovering his environment, as well as the body language and behaviours typical of his species. Actual sexual mounting is rare at this stage; it’s more likely to be an outlet for pent-up energy (excitement from play, a hectic atmosphere at home, etc.). You could try some activities to redirect his interest, such as playing with a ball; the idea is to distract him so he eventually stops the behaviour. It would also be helpful to know exactly when he starts humping... Is it around mealtimes? During a cuddle??? Looking at the other replies, it seems we’re all on the same page. If you can give us a bit more information, it’ll be much easier to help you sort out this little issue...

Hi there, Dogs don't "make love" – that’s strictly for humans! They mate to reproduce, and considering how young he is, it isn't even about that. Kikaah is spot on; he’s just venting his stress or excitement this way. I’d give the same advice: redirect his attention with a toy or take him for a walk. Once he's properly tired out, the idea won't even cross his mind. By the way, what times of day does he usually do this?

When a dog does that, it isn’t actually sexual; he’s not 'making love', he’s just venting some tension or frustration. It’s a way for him to let off steam. It tends to happen in the evening, doesn't it? Try to help him burn off that energy when you notice him getting too worked up—take him outside or give him a soft toy or a cushion. Make sure he understands that mounting people is a no-no; move him away with his cushion or toy and then ignore him.
