Hi everyone, I've recently adopted a Staffie puppy and I'm currently trying to house-train him.

The problem is that he's peeing every 5 minutes, so I take him outside, but once he's out there he just wants to play and only does tiny little dribbles, whereas when he's indoors he has a proper wee.

Could anyone help me out??

You're right, definitely don't hesitate to vary your walking routes.

Just be careful of areas that are a bit too mucky (there are health risks for young animals, and the smells can be quite overwhelming for a pup who’s still settling into their new environment). Also, keep an eye out for spots with litter or bits of food left around – when I lived in the city, my dogs found all sorts of unbelievable things that they would’ve happily wolfed down if I hadn't been keeping a close eye on them...

Thanks so much for your reply,

Actually, the grassy patch out the front is used by quite a few other dogs.

I’ll try taking him a bit further away to see if there's any improvement.

Hi there, It’s actually quite common for puppies to act like this, or even refuse to do their business outside the house altogether. Either he’s so excited by all the smells outside that he literally forgets he needs to go, and because he's so distracted, he doesn't fully empty his bladder. Or, on the flip side, the outside world might be a bit intimidating for him (too many loud noises or smells) and he holds it in for as long as possible, only "letting go" once he's back in a place where he feels safe (your home). There aren't really any miracle cures in the short term. The best thing is to take the pup out as often as possible and don’t end the walk or outing the second they’ve finished. Keep going for a bit longer, because some dogs and pups hold it in for as long as they can, having realised that doing a wee or a poo means the end of their (lovely) time outdoors. As silly as it might sound, rewarding your dog when they go is a tried and tested method. Basically, once the puppy starts urinating, wait until they’ve completely finished and then shower them with praise ("Yeees! Good boy! Go potty, that's a clever puppy!" — use a high-pitched, "baby" voice). It piques their interest and they quickly associate that feeling of joy with the act of going to the toilet. You look like a bit of a fool, but it works wonders. My dog is nearly 9 now and she’s even learned to go on command: "Do a wee?"... It’s very handy in certain situations! Hang in there, it won’t last forever. House training can just take a bit longer for some than others!
