Help! My dog’s eye has been scratched

Hi everyone,

I’ve got a bit of a problem; my dog’s eye was scratched by my dad’s cat. I only noticed the next day because his eye had gone cloudy, so I rushed him to the emergency vet. It turns out he has a perforated cornea (there’s a tiny hole you can actually see with the naked eye).

The vet prescribed a saline wash plus some drops to use eight times a day to disinfect it and help it heal. I have to go back a couple more times because she’s using special eye drops to help the cornea reform, I think. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Are the drops usually enough, or is there a risk he’ll need surgery?

"That can’t be very easy..." Yeah... Especially not knowing. Plus I know that vet procedures cost an arm and a leg and I’m on a very tight budget, so it’s doubly scary.

My dog once had his eye scratched by another dog's tooth. I had to put drops in his eye 5 to 8 times a day for a fortnight to let the cornea heal, while making sure he didn't rub it (as it was obviously really itchy). He didn't have any lasting damage, but it was very superficial in his case, even though I was terrified at the time because of the blood and how his eye looked. For your dog, it sounds a bit more serious, so it’s impossible to say if there’ll be any long-term effects or if he’ll need surgery. Only your vet will be able to tell you more depending on how it heals between appointments or if it gets infected. I hope he’ll be alright. Hi, thanks for sharing your story. My partner and I feel like it’s healing slowly. The vet doesn’t seem too worried; she says it doesn’t look very nice but hasn’t referred him to an ophthalmologist yet, which I think is a good sign, but I’m still a bit sceptical.
