Help! My dog’s eye has been scratched

Hi everyone,

I’ve got a bit of a problem; my dog’s eye was scratched by my dad’s cat. I only noticed the next day because his eye had gone cloudy, so I rushed him to the emergency vet. It turns out he has a perforated cornea (there’s a tiny hole you can actually see with the naked eye).

The vet prescribed a saline wash plus some drops to use eight times a day to disinfect it and help it heal. I have to go back a couple more times because she’s using special eye drops to help the cornea reform, I think. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Are the drops usually enough, or is there a risk he’ll need surgery?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping a vet might be able to read this. I’m currently living in Morocco and I’m avoiding the vets here because they aren't reliable (it’s worse than that, actually). My dog’s eye was scratched by a stray cat this morning and it’s full of blood. I’ve cleaned it with an antibiotic cream (Aureomycin) and I’ve spotted a tiny hole with a drop of clear fluid on the eye itself. I also gave her one 100mg Doxycycline tablet. Did I do the right thing? I’m not sure if this is the right antibiotic for this kind of problem. I’m going to buy some eye drops tomorrow, but which ones should I get? I’m so worried. Thanks in advance.

Hi, the same thing has happened to my dog... I’ve got a vet appointment this evening and I’d like to get an idea of the cost for the drops and the consultation. How much did it end up costing you?

This happened to one of my parents' dogs while I was looking after them, of course. I noticed it straight away—you couldn't even see the eye, it was shocking, so I took him to the emergency vet. The vet sent me straight to an ophthalmologist because she couldn't tell if the eye was completely ruptured or just badly damaged. In the end, it was a close call, but the eye wasn't burst, it was just the cornea. I can't remember the exact treatment he had, but it healed up well. He just had a little white dot left, the scar basically. Hi Mel 1, In our case, the vet saw it was the cornea that was damaged, so he's on treatment. The eye isn't ruptured, apparently. My dog is doing okay, apart from the first two days when he was mostly just lying around. Since then, we've seen a real improvement; the white part has almost gone. His eye looks slightly bluish, but that little hole seems to be getting smaller, so we're just giving it time...

OK, that’s put my mind at rest a bit. As I mentioned before, you can still see the hole with the naked eye. I do feel like it’s healing up a little, but we’ll have to see how it looks over the next few days.

My dog once poked her eye in a bush, and because she’s so stoical, I didn't notice a thing until the eye started turning white. The vet even let me see the hole through a microscope. It healed up quite quickly with treatment, but it left a tiny bump which probably affects her vision a bit; mind you, it’s never caused her the slightest bit of bother since.
