Hi everyone, does anyone here have a Shar Pei over 13 years old? Mine is coming up to 14 and she’s starting to show her age. I’m really dreading the day when... I’ll have to make that final decision.

Thanks all ;-)

I had to have my Shar Pei put to sleep; she was 17 years and just over two months old (on the 15th of April, she’d have been 17 and two and a half months, but she passed away in my arms on the 10th). I made the decision to let her go on the advice of the vet who saw her every month. Her health declined over about a fortnight, but until then, even though she obviously wasn't in peak condition, she was soldiering on bravely. Keep hope, your dog could still be with you for a long time yet. I certainly hope so for you, anyway.

Hi @Sandaln, why think about the worst case scenario already? If, like the others have said, he isn’t ill and is just pottering about like a happy old boy, there's no reason to dwell on the inevitable. They all leave us one day, after all – I think we're all aware of that – but you just need to make the most of these final years and not let him sense that he’s going to die. Besides, you’re only upsetting yourself for no reason before the time even comes. Well, that’s just my opinion anyway, have a good day.

Life expectancy depends on a lot of things:

    - diet

    - the individual dog itself

    - its sensitivity

    - lifestyle

    - general well-being

    - health status...

14 is a very good age for a Shar Pei as they fall into the medium-sized dog category. If your dog doesn't have any health issues, just cherish every moment you spend with him – that's all that really matters ;)

I’ve always heard that the average lifespan for a Shar Pei is around 10–12 years. The record was 18 years.
