Torn carpal pad

Evening all,

My Rottie has injured the carpal pad (the stopper pad) on his front left leg. He's torn a bit of the skin off the pad. He won't stop licking it. I've put some antiseptic on it and bandaged it up, but because he keeps licking it, the dressing is getting soaked and the pad is going all soft. What should I do? Should I keep it bandaged and put a cone on him to stop him licking it so much? Or should I leave it open to the air?

(Here are a few photos of his pad)

Thanks everyone

Hi there, This has happened a few times with my Malinois pup and each time I make sure to clean it thoroughly with Betadine morning and night, and I’m very careful to stop him from licking the spot to avoid any infection. I try to keep the wound open to the air and I also apply some Aloe Vera cream to speed up the healing. Anyway, nothing to worry about! And it’ll save you from having to shell out a fortune at the vet for a minor scrape.

Personally, in cases like this, I clean it three times a day and bandage the paw during the day. At night, I leave it uncovered (unless it’s bleeding, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here).

Mind you, I’ve never had a dog that was particularly sensitive in that department; mine heals up in a few hours for a similar wound.

    Keep us posted!

Yeah, that was the plan, to take him to the vet. I really hope it’s nothing serious for my boy.

Oh dear, that doesn't look good at all... Call an out-of-hours vet and ask them what to do to prevent an infection, and get him to a vet first thing tomorrow morning to get your little one sorted.
