My dog won’t sleep in his bed anymore

Hi everyone,

For the last three months, my one-year-old dog has refused to sleep in his bed. He’s been sleeping on the tiles in a room that’s barely heated. With winter coming, I’m really worried he’ll get cold!

If I put a cushion on the floor, he just lies down next to it. I also know that sleeping on such a hard surface isn't good for his joints at all!

I should mention that his bed isn't used as a place for punishment.

If you have any advice, please let me know :)

Joelle

Hi, my partner was away for two weeks and I bought my dog a new bed. He slept in his bed for the whole two weeks and was really calm, listening whenever I told him to go to bed. Now my partner is back and he’s started sleeping in our bed again. Even when I told him to get off, he bared his teeth at me. All night long he was jumping on and off the bed; I didn't get a wink of sleep. What should I do? Lol, I’m guessing you wrote that on your phone and didn't proofread it? If you can’t get your dog to listen to you, maybe your partner is able to put him in his place? Doesn't your bedroom have a door?

Hi everyone. My partner was away for a fortnight, and during that time I bought a new bed for my dog. Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice. I have an American Staffy who’s nearly 2. Since she was a puppy, she’s always slept in the same spot in her big crate with her bed. For the last two weeks, though, she’s refused to sleep there. She shreds her bed every time to get it out of the crate and prefers sleeping outside, even in the rain, even though she usually hates the rain. I’m really worried because this behaviour change was so sudden. Any advice would be great, thanks.

It’s probably just to keep cool. Mine has access to the sofa and his own comfy bed, but his lordship prefers sleeping on the tiles, as far away from the fireplace as possible! ^^

Ours sometimes sleeps in his bed, sometimes on the rug by the front door, and sometimes against the door in the hallway by the bedrooms, but it doesn't really bother us! It’s just because he’s comfortable like that! Don’t worry!!

No, there haven't been any other animals in his bed. Yuri is a dog who's always running hot, so I reckon he just preferred the floor during the summer.

No worries, happy to help! You mentioned he slept there for his first five months, but have you had another pet over that might have been in his bed, even just for five minutes? That's enough to leave a different scent behind, and then he won't feel at home there anymore. It’s just a theory, but worth considering. Good luck!

What's strange is that he's slept in his basket without any trouble for five months. He might be perfectly happy on the floor, but it breaks my heart :( As for the armchair, he knows that’s off-limits ;) but he still tries his luck every now and then!

I’ll give it a go with a piece of clothing, like you suggested.

    Thanks again,

    Joelle

It’s true it’s not easy to get them to settle in their bed, but have you tried putting an item of clothing with your scent on it in there? Maybe he’ll give it a go then. Don’t worry about the cold floor tiles; it clearly doesn't bother him, otherwise he’d go straight to his warm bed. Tayzon never wanted to use his bed—he loves the armchair and hiding under the cushions or the sofa throw. As for his joints, there's no need to worry as he's still young. But try playing with him near his bed as well, so he knows it’s not a punishment if you’re right there with him. Good luck!
