Vomiting after eating a pork bone from a pet shop

Hi everyone,

Two days ago, my dog had an ear infection. He wouldn't stop rubbing his ears and was really going at them... while waiting for his vet appointment that afternoon, I bought him a pork bone from the pet shop to take his mind off his ears. He didn't need telling twice and gnawed on it all day. I should mention he'd already had one two weeks before without any real issues.

But unfortunately, he threw up some chunks of bone a few hours later. We weren't overly concerned at the time, thinking the bone just hadn't agreed with him and that he'd be fine...

However, since yesterday afternoon, I've noticed a loss of appetite as well as more vomiting. He's been sick twice since this morning—just bile and grass he ate while out on a walk...

I’ve put him on a fast to let his stomach settle; he didn't want to eat anything at lunchtime anyway, even though he's usually a total glutton! He hasn't been sick since, but he seems very tired.

He's nearly 9 years old and he's a Rhodesian Ridgeback cross.

What can I do to make him feel better? Should I take him to the vet tomorrow? Has anyone else been through this before?

Thanks for your help!

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies! My dog started begging again last night (which shows he's got his appetite back), and since he seemed starving I gave him some dry food and he polished the lot. His poo looks normal... we'll see how things are during our walk this morning. He hasn't been sick again since then. Mind you, his tummy is rumbling a lot, but that's probably just because he hasn't eaten much over the last few days... Everything seems to be back to normal for now, but I'll call the vet at the first sign of anything else.

If there’s a blockage, nothing goes in and nothing comes out. And things go downhill fast. Is he still drinking normally? Is his tummy hard? Soft? Normal? Bloated? Does he show signs of discomfort when you feel his tummy? You could try giving him some plain yoghurt—goat's milk is better, but otherwise just normal yoghurt. That’s what the vet recommended to me. See how he’s behaving on Monday to decide whether you need to take him to the vet or not. It’s up to you, really; you’re the one who knows your dog and his behaviour best. Back in February, mine had a stomach bug (likely from scavenging something) and I ended up at the vet twice. One of those was an out-of-hours emergency visit because his back legs seemed almost paralysed... In the end, he "just" had a tummy ache, but it was really frightening to see! If you're worried, it’s better to go to the vet for "nothing" than to regret it later if things take a turn for the worse. It could also be something other than the bone. The vet will put your mind at rest. But they probably won't do an X-ray without a serious reason, as it's tricky with such a big dog. Last time mine had an X-ray, he only weighed about 88 lbs and it took three of us to hold him... When he had that stomach bug, the vet told me straight that because of his size (he’s about 11 stone now), he didn’t want to do an X-ray as he’d have to be sedated, which is a bit of a mission.

    Hi,

Yes, I think you should take them to the vet. If you've noticed lethargy, a loss of appetite, and vomiting, I think you need to see the vet who, as mentioned before, will check to make sure there isn't a blockage.

Yeah, get them to the vet straight away. They’ll probably do an X-ray to check for a blockage and then give some jabs along with some liquid paraffin to take regularly for a few days to help clear everything out...

We went through the same thing a few months back; no more bones since then (in our case, it was a massive raw beef bone, even though she’d eaten them loads of times before).
