Feeding your Pyrenean.

Hi.

I'm thinking of getting a Pyrenean Mountain Dog.

Where could I find some affordable dry food?

How much should I be feeding them? And what quality?

I assume supermarket dry food at about 40p a pound isn't going to be high enough quality.

Yeah, that’s what I’m doing, and plenty of them seem to offer a diet that fits the bill on paper. But there are just so many brands I’ve never heard of (well, unknown to me anyway), so it’s not exactly straightforward to decide between this one or that one. That was the main reason for my question, really. I’ll keep reading though and try to make my own mind up.

I’d really suggest looking into a dog's nutritional needs, probably depending on the breed too – things like protein, fat, vitamins, and so on. That way, you’ll be able to compare things for yourself by checking the ingredients on the bag or the tin. A brand name alone doesn't mean much, but supermarket stuff is generally low-quality, which is why it’s so cheap. BY BUYING LARGE BAGS ONLINE, YOU CAN GET DECENT DRY FOOD FOR A MUCH BETTER PRICE.

Hi, we’ve got a 4-month-old female Pyrenean Mountain Dog. At the moment, she’s eating about 0.4 lbs of a standard dry food in the morning, and in the evening, she gets about 0.45 lbs of rice mixed with 0.35 lbs of dry food. She’s constantly on the prowl for food to steal – last night she swiped our meal off the kitchen worktop, and at lunchtime, she nabbed half a baguette! As soon as she comes in from the garden, she goes straight for the cats' bowls to steal their food. What do you think I should do? Am I not feeding her enough, or is it something else?

Hi everyone. I’m about to get a 12-week-old female Pyrenean Mountain Dog. I’m budgeting at least £100 a month on average. I’m looking at high-quality dry food or most likely a raw diet.

Hi everyone, I live in a small house with a little garden in the countryside, between the coast and the mountains. I’m thinking about adopting "Carla", a 2-year-old Pyrenean Mountain Dog who is currently at a local rescue centre. Her previous owner can no longer look after her, but she apparently gets on well with both cats and dogs. Her profile mentions she's "best friends with her food bowl"! I’d love to go and visit her, but before I do, I’d like to get an idea of the costs, especially for vaccinations. How much should I expect to pay for jabs and other monthly essentials? Thanks!

Well, I don't think you need to be rich to have a dog, but you shouldn't be tight either. When I saw that, I just thought to myself, why even get a dog if you're going to talk like that?

I’m really against that kind of dry food. Not long ago at the supermarket, I saw a woman grabbing five 22lb bags of the value range, saying that paying less than £21 was still expensive and that it was more than enough for her dog. I was absolutely appalled. She’s paying (I went and checked) about 42p a kilo and she has the nerve to complain! For £21, I can’t even get a single bag of my usual stuff. I find it truly shocking, especially as she couldn’t care less what was actually in it. Look, it’s fine to want to save money, but there’s a limit. To me, paying 85p or even 42p a kilo is just ridiculous. When you love your dog, you can afford to spend a bit more. I’m not saying you have to buy the most expensive brand on the shelf, but there has to be a bare minimum.

You really ought to see a vet to find out more, but what I do know is that they need to be fed sparingly. It's in their nature, especially considering a male weighs between 110 and 143 lbs (about 8 to 10 stone) and a female weighs between 88 and 121 lbs (roughly 6 to 8.5 stone).

    Hello,

You should NEVER feed them supermarket dry food! You need to find a specific brand to stick with throughout your pet’s life. If you want to change it, you’ll have to do so gradually.

You should use a measuring cup that shows the right amount based on their age. There are certain brands like Royal Canin where you give either Junior or Adult food, depending on how old they are. Don't hesitate to ask your vet for advice.

    Best of luck!
