My Pomeranian is losing a massive amount of fur – is this normal?

Hello everyone!

For the past few weeks, my 4-and-a-half-year-old Pomeranian has been shedding a huge amount of fur. He's always shed a bit, but he’s always kept his fluff... Right now, even though it's moulting season, this is extreme. He's losing his undercoat, his tail is visibly thinning out, and every time I stroke him, I end up covered in fluff. I just don't understand it...

Am I not grooming him correctly? Is his food not right for him? Basically, I have so many questions and I'm really worried. On top of that, there’s so much conflicting advice online about brushing and everything else that I’m completely lost...

Just for context, there’s been no change in his behaviour (bearing in mind he’s naturally quite anxious); he’s still very active, playful, eating well, not scratching himself... nothing. However, he is home alone during the day while I'm at work.

Does anyone have any advice? Do you think I should take him to the vet?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi there, How is your dog doing? I have a Spitz too; she’s twelve and a half now. She’s also been losing her fur for about a year—well, she’s thinning out, but I never actually find any hair lying around. She’s looking really bare in places. I’ve read about a product called Dermacton online that’s supposed to work miracles for coat regrowth, but I’m still a bit sceptical. I know it’s a UK brand sold in pounds, but I’m looking for some reviews and to see if anyone else has been in the same boat. Hang in there, Catherine

Hi there, thanks so much for your reply. You're right, I have actually switched his dry food recently. I tried to transition him over gradually so it wouldn't be such a "shock" to his system, but maybe this new brand just doesn't agree with him? Do you have any recommendations for dry food at all, or not really? No, I haven't noticed any patches and he isn't scratching at all; he's just losing his fur... Thanks again! 😌

    Hi there,

It might be down to the dry food. Have you noticed if he has any patches or if he's scratching himself excessively? You might need to see the vet if things don't improve. Best of luck.
