Hi everyone!
I have a little Pomeranian with what I think is a beautiful coat.
Except... after having to wear a cone for a week, she's got some huge mats behind her ears. Right between the neck and the base of the ears. The matting has caught the fur at the start of the ears too.
Because of this, she's scratching at it quite a bit as it must be pulling, I imagine.
There were two mats on each side.
I managed to get the two less compact ones out, but I can't shift the two biggest ones.
I've tried using dry shampoo and detangling spray on them to try and separate the knots.
But with these last two, nothing seems to work.
I use a 100% boar bristle brush and I've also tried a slicker brush.
The skin is so thin there and it also hurts her if I pull, so it’s very delicate.
On one of them, I tried using scissors to make a few small snips into the knot to try and at least break it up. But the separated parts are still just as difficult because they're so compact. It's clean inside though...
I'm wondering if I should just cut them right out?
But it would look awful and I'm worried about how the fur will grow back...
Or should I take her to a groomer? But I'm scared she'll be in pain. I'm being really gentle behind the ears (but I've already spent over 4 hours on it between last night and today...)
Should I let it grow out a bit so there's more room between the skin and the mat? Or will it just get worse if I leave it?
She’s just finishing shedding at the moment, so the next moult isn't for another 6 months.
Anyway, poor thing, I don't know what's best.
I feel so guilty for not taking the cone off every day to brush her in that spot.
If you have any advice, I'm all ears.
Thanks a lot!
