Alopecia X in a Pomeranian

Hi everyone, my dog has been suffering from alopecia for quite a while now. He has lost almost all the fur on his back. I’ve tried the implant, dietary supplements, and another tablet whose name I can't remember, but nothing seems to work; his fur just won't grow back. I'm at my wits' end and don't know what to do anymore. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Hi there, My wire-haired dachshund seems to have seasonal flank alopecia that flares up every year in the winter, and then the fur grows back in the spring. I was wondering if the treatment for your dog has been effective in the long term, over several years? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi everyone, do you think this is alopecia or just some hair loss? It started where the harness sits; at first the skin was pink, but over time it's spread a bit and the skin has turned black. Sometimes it looks like a bit of hair is growing back, but in the end it’s still the same.

    Hi there, that's classic alopecia!

Hi, I also have a little Pom with BSD like you. It started after surgery for luxating patellas, which meant his back legs were shaved. I’m a member of the Alopecia X Facebook group where you can pick up a lot of info. About two months ago, I had the vet give him a six-month chemical castration implant, as it can have good results. I started using Dermacton at the same time. To begin with, the dead hair that needed to come out shed a lot—it’s quite frightening, but you have to persevere. After two months of treatment, over the last fortnight, the fur on his back has grown back by about 2cm, which is great! However, his armpits and all around his neck have gone bald, and his bum remains black; I haven't been doing it long enough to tell you much more yet. I’ve since found out that there will be periods of remission followed by more hair loss anyway... If I can be of any more help, just let me know!

For anyone using Dermacton, could you let me know—if it worked for your pet—did the hair loss come back once you stopped using it?

I think my Spitz is starting to develop alopecia. I’ve noticed that ever since he was neutered, the fur on his belly never really grew back after the vet shaved it, and his skin is turning darker.

Now he’s starting to lose fur on his back legs, his chest, and under his front legs. I’m seeing the vet on Wednesday but I’m worried they’ll start putting him on some pricey treatment. Like many of you on this forum, I’ve seen the product Dermacton, which I’ve already ordered. I’m going to test it on his back legs first before trying it on other areas because even though there are plenty of positive reviews on Amazon, there are some negative ones that are a bit worrying.

For now, I'll admit it’s not much compared to some of the photos I’ve seen on this site, but that’s exactly why I don't want it to get to that stage.

Aside from a possible hormonal imbalance following his neutering, I don’t see what else it could be:

    good quality dry food (Purizon),

infrequent grooming with good products recommended by a groomer who specialises in Spitzes,

regular brushing (once a week) but not every day, specifically to avoid damaging his coat, which has never been very thick and rarely gets mats.

For those of you whose dogs have alopecia, could you tell me how often you brush and groom them?

    Thanks

Hi Alexe 061, I was wondering which of the Dermacton products you used for your dog's alopecia? Thanks, as my Pomeranian has been having the same issue for a few months now. I thought it was being caused by the harness, but now I'm starting to think it's more likely to be alopecia.

Hi everyone, for a few years now my Keeshond has been suffering from Alopecia X. After several unsuccessful treatments, we decided to change his diet four or five months ago. No more grain-based kibble or wet food. We’ve started preparing a BARF diet: raw meat, a small amount of veggies, offal and bones. We also give him a little bit of grain-free dry food in the evening. His coat is looking gorgeous again; the black patches have cleared up and his fur has almost completely grown back over his whole body. I really think grains were the cause of the hair loss. At the rate things are going, I’m sure that in three months at most, he’ll have his full coat back just like when he was a youngster!
