Hi everyone,

I’ve had a ‘little’ Spitz for a good two months now.

The lady we bought him from told us he was a Pomeranian, but he’s only 6 months old and already weighs 17 lbs, so I’m a bit surprised. I don’t know enough about the breed to tell if he’s actually a toy variety or not. My vet couldn’t really give me a straight answer; he just said the main thing is that he’s a healthy Spitz.

I know curiosity killed the cat, but I’d still love to get some sort of answer.

Is he going to keep growing? Get bigger? (I haven’t measured him yet and my vet didn’t either, but looking at him, I’d guess he’s about 24 inches tall).

Is he a Pomeranian? A Medium Spitz? A Large one?

Anyway, I hope someone has an answer for me.

Thanks in advance!

So, he’s a certain type; he looks more or less like the breed, but he isn’t actually one. He could end up being any size; strictly speaking, he isn’t a 'toy', 'medium', or 'large' variety, or even a 'German Spitz'. Dogs don't always grow at the same rate. Even when you take a puppy to the vets, the adult sizes they predict are rarely spot on. Quite simply, there’s no way of knowing for sure.

I don't really know much about dogs. Kennel Club registered? No. The lady had to rehome him, so he wasn't vaccinated, microchipped, or wormed (the dad isn't KC registered either).

No, I don't think he's a crossbreed; he's definitely got a proper Spitz look about him, but I’m not so sure about the 'miniature' bit.

    Does he have a pedigree?

Whoops, I didn't explain myself very well. I think he's about 60cm long in total. I'll try to upload a photo so you can get a better idea, though I know it’s not always easy to tell from a picture. So, has he reached his full adult size now, if I’ve understood correctly? No, I don’t think he’s a crossbreed as he definitely has a proper Spitz face, but I have my doubts about the 'toy' part. Thanks for your replies.

That’s big for a Pomeranian, is he Kennel Club registered? You need to measure from the withers down to the ground, because at 60 cm (about 24 inches) for 17 lbs, I’m not even sure if he’d be viable. Enzo really isn’t chunky and he’s about 63 cm (25 inches) and weighs roughly 73–75 lbs (around 5 stone 4).

My wife’s got one, he’s about 8.5 inches at the shoulder and weighs 5.5 lbs at 18 months old.

When you say 60 cm, do you mean height at the withers or from the shoulder blades to the base of the tail? Do you have a photo?

At six months old, dogs are usually around 70 to 80% of their adult size, so he won't grow much more. But 7.7 kg (about 17 lbs) seems very big for a purebred Pomeranian. Are you sure he isn't a crossbreed?
