Hi everyone,

I’ve had a ‘little’ Spitz for a good two months now.

The lady we bought him from told us he was a Pomeranian, but he’s only 6 months old and already weighs 17 lbs, so I’m a bit surprised. I don’t know enough about the breed to tell if he’s actually a toy variety or not. My vet couldn’t really give me a straight answer; he just said the main thing is that he’s a healthy Spitz.

I know curiosity killed the cat, but I’d still love to get some sort of answer.

Is he going to keep growing? Get bigger? (I haven’t measured him yet and my vet didn’t either, but looking at him, I’d guess he’s about 24 inches tall).

Is he a Pomeranian? A Medium Spitz? A Large one?

Anyway, I hope someone has an answer for me.

Thanks in advance!

    Hiya

I’ve got a nine-and-a-half-month-old Spitz. I was told he’d be a miniature, but that was a massive lie! He’s ended up somewhere between small and medium – he weighs about 13 lbs and is a bit over 12 inches tall.

Is your dog Kennel Club registered or just a pedigree type? What does he weigh? My German Spitz is a male and weighs about 14.7 lbs.

I’d say it all depends on your dog’s parents and her bloodline as well.

What does the breeder have to say about it?

Hi everyone, I’ve just bought a female German Spitz. My parents aren't happy about it because they think she’s already quite big for a 3-month-old and they’re worried she’s just going to keep getting bigger. What size does an adult female get to and how many lbs should she weigh? Thanks!!

Evening, I had the exact same thing happen with mine. They’re actually Japanese Spitz and not Pomeranians.

If he's only 6 months old, he should still put on a bit more weight and fill out a little; he'll probably end up being around 19 or 20 lbs (about 1 stone 6).

In terms of size, as he’s a small dog, he shouldn’t get much taller—maybe just another inch or two, but nothing major.

To measure him without a proper measuring stick, I just do the same as you’d do with kids: make a little mark on the wall level with his withers and then measure up. It’s not 100% accurate, but it gives you a rough idea.

    Hi,

I don't think your Spitz is a 'toy', as Pomeranians usually weigh between roughly 2 and 9 lbs, so I reckon your dog is a 'medium' Spitz.

I bought a Pomeranian puppy at 2 months old and she weighs barely 2 lbs.

There's no way he's a toy then; a toy shouldn't be more than 8 inches tall. To me, he looks a lot like a Medium Spitz. Mind you, 15 lbs seems like quite a lot... My Spitz is 9 inches tall and weighs about 4.5 lbs.
