Why is the final stage of mating not happening? (The tie)

Hi everyone, basically, I'm trying to mate my little princess, Molly, with her boyfriend, Leo. We’re roughly on day 12 of her season, and this is the second day I've taken her over to the stud. As soon as they saw each other, they 'went for it' and Leo mounted her straight away to get down to business, but the problem is they still aren't reaching 'the tie'... which is the final stage of the mating. I was wondering if any of you had some advice on how to make sure that final stage actually happens. Thanks.

    Hi,

Did the mating end up being successful?

If not, I’ve got a handsome male...

Well, I'm really pleased that you’re happy yourself, as I must admit it wasn't a sure thing given that we went off on a bit of a tangent... and yes, you’re quite right that the relationship is mutual and not forced at all between the dogs. The digressions weren't directed at you... Anyway, I’ve used this thread to learn some things I thought were just myths... I'd heard the expression (if you’ll excuse the phrasing!) "getting stuck", but I didn't realise it was a genuine stage of mating... As for the technical side, while it’s interesting to know, I must be too much of a romantic. Sometimes I think I’d rather not know all the details and would prefer the "birds and the bees" version... Well, even if I couldn't shed much light on things, I hope I've entertained you a bit! Have a good evening... well, good night actually, it’s 1 am!

Hi everyone. First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who has tried to shed some light on what’s happening here. I also want to clarify that, as @lorna pointed out, there’s never been any question of a refusal, either from Molly (the female) or from Leo (the male). The fact is, it’s only the final stage of the mating (the tie) that isn't happening. Molly is more than keen and poor Leo is certainly giving it his best shot. However, it’s true that sometimes Molly pulls away before they "lock", and other times it’s Leo... it remains to be seen if one of them is trying to "avoid" that final stage... Thanks once again.

LOL... it’s true, I’ve seen some mating attempts by young, often inexperienced dogs who were trying to put their bits somewhere on the poor girl's head or her flanks, while she just had a look on her face as if to say "God, he’s a right idiot, this one...". They are sometimes much more awkward than our teenagers having their first time! 😁

Please, read on! It’s not Eloise’s comment that’s surprising, aside from the fact that I can't see myself guiding a dog through mating, it’s the one from "jcne"....

Eloise hasn’t said anything on this thread that deserves even the slightest telling off, other than the fact that I have no desire to put my hands there—and I’m sure the dog wouldn't want me to either!

If he could talk, he’d probably say something like: "Oi, what do you think you're doing?! Let go of that right now!"

I can just imagine the scene: it’d be like a comedy sketch!

I don’t see what all the fuss is about with Eloise’s post either... as she wasn’t talking about the tie, just about the dog missing the mark (which is a completely different thing altogether).

The young student vet never said to force the *****; you’re not being very nice. She only suggested guiding the dog to help him find his way. It’s a common enough practice; you can think what you like about it, but it’s not rape. If a ***** doesn't want to, she’ll usually make it very clear. Then again, it’s true we often see some... surprising advice, but if only it were just from the student vets! Taking away the water bowl to avoid accidents at night, putting a shock collar on a young ***** who doesn’t walk perfectly to heel, locking a dog in a crate to stop it causing too much damage... @Centpedigree, you should read what gets said on this forum; there’s a bit of everything, and some of it is absolutely mind-boggling! 🤣 And to finish on the student vets, you’ve got to keep in mind that they are students—young people who are learning and, by definition, don't know everything yet.

Maybe the female is pulling away too quickly, so the male doesn't have enough time to swell properly and get a tie? Just a theory, mind you... Mind you, if he's a bit rubbish in that department, you can't really blame her! 😁

@jcne “If they don’t tie, it’s more than likely that the problem lies with your *****. It’s a complex behavioural issue that I won't go into detail about here.”

    I don’t really see the connection between a female’s behavioural issue and a male’s penis 🤪

Feel free to explain it here, it’s no trouble, and it might help shed some light on things for me ^^

Spot on – Mady asked a really interesting and educational question for people like me who didn't even know what 'the tie' was, other than a cumulonimbus or a stra... oh no, those are clouds, aren't they? Sorry (my cheeky side’s at it again). It was one of the bits of advice given in the replies that seemed really odd to me... or maybe it was just a clumsy way of saying that if they refuse, there's nothing you can do, I hope...
