Hi there, my Maltese weighs about 20 lbs and is 14 inches tall. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

We’ll also have to see what size she is, but that looks like it might be quite an issue for an initial registration.

I have a 16-month-old purebred Maltese girl, not KC registered, who weighs about 16.5 lbs (roughly 1 stone 2 lbs)... is her weight going to be a problem for getting her initial breed registration? Thanks!

I've seen the photos of your dog and he looks big for ten months to me, but if he doesn't grow any more, he should be within the breed standard.

Hmm, I’m not sure if that Bichon is actually a pedigree, as they shouldn’t really weigh more than 9 or 11 lbs. 20 lbs sounds massive! Mind you, he might just be really overweight... give your Bichon a cuddle :)

Right, I’m not sure what I was looking up the other day, but I must have made a mistake in what I wrote.

A Maltese shouldn’t exceed 25–26 cm at the withers to meet the breed standard. So, that’s the height sorted.

Blimey, 24 lbs! If it's a pedigree, that’s really incredible. Mind you, you often get dogs that are larger than the breed standard. Mine is one of those, and I used to have Bernese Mountain Dogs – the mum, Malyce, was 9 stone 6 and her daughter, Ondine, was 8 stone 13, and it wasn’t fat, NO NO!!! They were both breed-certified and had "very good" natural aptitude test results, so there you go, haha!

A dog that isn't KC registered can't have a pedigree.

In a pet shop!!!! Well, there you go, she’s been ripped off. You really shouldn’t buy from there; they’re often puppies from puppy farms. You still see them in pet shops because there are still people who don’t know any better and buy them anyway. Spread the word to anyone you know who’s thinking of going to one.

So your puppy was very expensive for one without papers. I got Arco for around £730, fully Kennel Club registered and from a really good line.
