My spayed girl is driving unneutered males "crazy with love"

Evening,

My 13-year-old dog is spayed. Two of my friends' dogs, who come round to the house regularly, have always been good mates with her, but nothing more than that.

However, one of them, a 12-year-old Golden Retriever, visited recently and was completely obsessed with her—he acted like he was in love, was really pushy and, even though she rebuffed him several times, he just kept coming back for more!

A few days later, a 7-year-old Samoyed arrived; he knows her well and likes her, but usually nothing more. And yet, same thing—he seemed completely "in love". I caught him mounting her twice but managed to stop him just in time; she also snapped at him and, thankfully, he wasn't quite as persistent.

I don't understand what's happening or how to explain this change in behaviour. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Has your girl had any discharge and/or has she been licking herself down there?

If so, it could be vaginitis, which makes her smell like she's in season.

One of my dogs went through this recently; our neutered male and an entire dog both tried to mount her because of it.

If it is that, the vet will give her antibiotics and some pain relief.

It might clear up on its own, but that isn't always the case.

That’s quite strange; I’ve heard of neutered males getting pestered by intact males before. Some neutered dogs apparently smell like a ***** in season, basically. But I’ve never heard of similar stories regarding females. Are you absolutely sure your dog was spayed properly? It’s quite rare, but sometimes a spay can be "partial" (or unsuccessful), meaning the female goes into season without us noticing, but other dogs can definitely smell it. This happened to my parents with their cat. She was supposed to be spayed, but there was a constant parade of tomcats hanging around her. After a vet visit, it turned out the spay had "failed"—a tiny bit of ovary had been left behind. She was going into heat, which was imperceptible to us humans (especially as we thought she’d been "done"), but the local toms could certainly tell! She could have even had a litter! Luckily, we realised what was going on in time. A failed spay is pretty rare, but it does happen. Bitches usually come into season twice a year, so if the timing seems to match up, it might be worth asking your vet what they think.

I find that a bit strange. My girl was spayed when she was around 9 or 10 (due to pyometra), and no dog ever had the cheek to get too close to her, neither before nor after. It’s always Her Ladyship who decides what distance other dogs should keep, and woe betide them if they try to cross her boundaries, lol.
