Hi everyone!!!!

She managed to climb up the log pile

knocked the bag over

opened it

and...

must have eaten goodness knows how much dry food, but when I arrived she was looking very sheepish... anyway

what should I do?

Should I put her on a fast? Should I skip her meals tomorrow???

She hasn't had a poo yet!! I hope she'll be alright

🙂 Be careful to ease her back in slowly after her diet and her playtime; she’s likely to want to bolt her food... and yes, if possible, as Tania mentioned, a photo of the little greedy guts please! ^^

    Have a lovely Sunday!

Hi Léa, Junior Vet Advice service, Are you really recommending a 24 to 48-hour fast for a 4-month-old puppy? He’s a Lab puppy, and since he’s right in the middle of a growth spurt, I’m quite worried... Only giving a puppy water for 24 to 48 hours 😔 Kind regards, Christelle

    Hi there,

Ideally (should this ever happen again), you should try to get your dog to the vet to induce vomiting if you catch them straight away, before the dry food has been digested; this helps to prevent indigestion.

In your situation, you need to avoid any physical activity for 24 to 48 hours while everything is being digested. You should also withhold food for at least 24 hours. During this 24 to 48-hour period, you may notice some vomiting, diarrhoea and flatulence.

Please note, if you have any concerns at all about your dog’s condition, don’t hesitate to contact your vet, as they are the only ones who can manage any potential complications. I would also recommend getting in touch with them if your dog’s condition doesn't improve after 48 hours.

Best of luck to you and your dog,

Léa – Veterinary Student, Project Manager for ProVéto Junior Conseil.

    So?

    Is everything alright today?

We should’ve called her Panacea; then maybe she’d watch her figure a bit more...

Bloat isn't really the primary risk given how young he is. It's more common in adult large-breed dogs. There's plenty of info online about it if you want to have a look. I'd say if he's sick during the night, don't tell him off. But don't let him eat it back up! Tomorrow morning, take him for a short, calm walk on the lead. Put out about an ounce of dry food and see how things go. No need for any home remedies, just plenty of water and keep an eye on him to make sure he's drinking a normal amount. And of course... make sure you've secured 'Pandora's box' now! ;-) Honestly, it doesn't sound like anything too serious at this stage.

At 4 months old, a puppy shouldn't really fast for 24 hours. Keep her lunch tomorrow very light and, as Albator said, no walks. Anyway, if she’s already too full, she won't eat much, even for a typical Labrador! ^^.. Labradors are indeed prone to bloat. Yes, it’s very good to split the daily food allowance for all dogs... it's much easier on the digestion. In my house, for exercise (like swimming or jumping), there is no food beforehand, and after any intense activity, I’d wait about 2 hours before giving them their meal. If there is any vomiting, a tiny teaspoon of grated ginger mixed with a bit of water can help. See you tomorrow.

I think keeping an eye on him and a 24-hour fast should be enough; that’s what a vet recommended when a friend’s Labrador ate loads of cat litter 😯 His tummy was huge and really bloated, but it did pass on its own in the end. So, I’d imagine with dry food it should be even easier to pass ^^ You might have to expect him to be sick once or twice.
