How do I report a bad breeder?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum, so here’s a quick introduction 😌

I live near Paris and my partner and I are the happy owners of two dogs and a cat.

I’m writing to you today regarding the adoption of one of our dogs, a little Japanese Spitz, who we got at Christmas in 2016.

When we arrived at the breeder’s place, I was so caught up in the excitement that I didn’t pay enough attention to the fact that the dogs' living area was filthy and overcrowded with all sorts of different breeds. (I’ll post more about that later as it goes even further than that).

Even though I was meant to see several litters, the lady only showed me two puppies from the same litter, along with their mum. I immediately noticed huge physical differences between the two little ones, from the size of their eyes to the texture of their coats. I asked to see the other puppies, but she claimed she didn’t have any. Perhaps a bit too hastily, I confirmed by email that I’d take one of the girls, the one she’d recommended.

Once I’d paid for the puppy, I went to collect her on the agreed date.

And when I arrived, what a surprise—I found a whole other litter of five puppies the same age as mine. This was despite her saying there weren't any others.

The breeder, without any shame at all, then told us straight out that our Maru wasn’t "pretty", that her eyes were too small, her snout too long, and her coat non-existent. She even said the mum didn’t produce nice pups and never had.

A MONTH LATER, SHE POSTED AN AD TO GET RID OF THE MOTHER!! Since then, she’s also got rid of the father.

It’s now a year later and I’ve never received any Kennel Club registration papers, nor even any proof that the litter was ever declared. The breeder has gone completely silent despite my many follow-ups. I love my dog because she’s my dog, obviously. But being objective, I’ve been ripped off and paid a premium for her. My dog looks nothing like a Japanese Spitz (either physically or in terms of temperament).

She has very little fur, very irritated skin, she barks constantly (a serious fault for the breed), is nervous and aggressive, destroys everything at home, and isn't house-trained. What breaks my heart the most is that she also has tummy troubles: she has poor digestion and is constantly being sick. She really struggles to put on any weight.

Obviously, I have my share of the responsibility (and if you have any advice, I’m all ears).

But I adopted my other dog a few months later and he doesn't have any of these issues...

I’d like to know what my options are for reporting this breeder and perhaps getting them sanctioned. I just want this abuse to be flagged so that other people don’t get conned as well.

Thanks a lot, and sorry for the wall of text...

Be careful — now that you’ve named the breeder, they could potentially sue you for defamation, even if you’re completely right to speak out about your experience.

Try Googling the name of her kennel followed by '2016 litter'. You should be able to find all the litters she’s produced, provided she posted them online at some point, even if the ads have since been deleted. This only really works if she used a site like 'Chien de France', though. Ultimately, only the Kennel Club can prove what was actually declared or not. Either way, if the mating or the litter wasn't registered, your girl will never be fully pedigree recognised (unless the Spitz breed register is 'open', meaning you could apply for an initial registration, but even then she’d have to be an outstanding example of the breed to be accepted). In any case, this person needs to be held accountable for everything she’s putting her dogs and their new owners through. Beyond the scams, we're looking at around 40 mistreated dogs and puppies being born in very poor health.

My partner had the sense to film our dog in her pen which was absolutely covered in mess; I’ll try and find the video... Thanks for sharing your stories. I think I’ve got an invoice too, but I’ll have to have a proper look at the details. What’s worrying me is that on her website, in the ‘born here’ section, she’s deleted the 2016 column. As a result, my dog doesn’t show up there anymore. In any case, the breeder is based in the Loiret area. It honestly makes me sick to think she’s got current litters and all the puppies are already reserved. You’re right—it’s a total puppy farm.

Personally, I would’ve walked away right then and there. It’s up to you to get in touch with The Kennel Club to find out if the litter was actually registered, and check the microchip database to make sure the dog is officially registered in your name. You should also report this breeder—even go as far as filing a formal complaint if you haven't been given any proper paperwork.

Anyone can join any club. It doesn't make them a good breeder. In fact, being a member of loads of clubs is often just a way to convince people looking for a decent kennel that their place is top-tier. But it doesn't prove a thing. Many of the best breeders have nothing to prove and don't belong to any clubs at all. About 40... how awful. So she’s hit another bracket; if I’m not mistaken, once you have 20 dogs, even stricter regulations and more paperwork are required... The microchip registration is just for ID, so it doesn't prove she's a purebred. I assume you haven't seen her pedigree certificate?

Hi, This sounds like a proper puppy farm to me. Do you know if she’s actually registered as a professional licensed breeder? Or if her setup is registered with the local council as a licensed kennel if she has more than 9 dogs? If she isn't above board on at least one of those points, you can report her as she wouldn’t be following the rules. If it turns out she is licensed, you can still ask the council's animal welfare team or even the RSPCA to carry out a health and welfare inspection. If the facility is in the state you described, there’s a good chance she’d lose her licence to breed. As for your dog's pedigree status, you should contact the Kennel Club to find out if the mating and the litter were actually registered. If they weren't, I hope you have a receipt proving you bought a dog sold as "KC registered" when it actually wasn't, so you can take action against her for misrepresentation. In any case, once a breeder has a registered kennel name (an affix), they commit to only producing Kennel Club registered dogs. If she’s not following that, you can report her to the Kennel Club and she’ll lose her affix. Honestly, you’ve got more than enough there to get her shut down! Hi and thanks for your reply, Right, here is the info from the website: Member of the Japanese Spitz and Nordic Dog Breed Club Club representative for the sporting results of our "little white ones" Member of the Breed Club’s Breeding Committee It all looks good on paper, so I tried to tell myself I’d probably just ended up with the "bad" litter. She mentioned that she had a licence to keep more than 9 dogs. She claims to have about forty of them. On the vet certificate, it only says "provisional microchip registration". Then under "Breed", and then in the category section, it says "not categorised".

No, absolutely not – there’s nothing normal about stacking dogs on top of each other and leaving them to live in their own filth. This isn’t just a puppy farm; it’s animal cruelty, and it’s against the law. Once there’s been a welfare check, you can be certain that this misery will be put to an end. There are very specific regulations for breeding establishments, and absolutely nothing you’ve described follows the rules. Please take the steps I mentioned above; no dog, no matter the breed, deserves to be treated like this, and anyone with so little respect for animals has no right to own them.

Good grief! That is without a doubt a puppy farm, likely dog trafficking from Eastern Europe. You should send your account to the RSPCA and the police. If you can get some photos of the place (pretend you're looking to buy a puppy), where exactly is this "breeder" located? Hi and thanks for your reply, Unfortunately, I don't have any photos. But as the breeder also runs a boarding kennel, I think I could easily go back there. To give you a bit more detail about the state of the place: a few months after we adopted her, I had to go away and left my dog with her breeder. When I dropped her off, I had to wait in the yard for a bit, and out of curiosity, I followed the sound of barking. I came across a barn with five or six cages with no bedding, stacked on top of each other, each containing a dog... It was practically like battery farming!! At the time, I just told myself I didn't know much about it and that maybe it was normal. Especially since the breeder didn't seem at all bothered that I'd seen it... When my partner went back to collect our girl about a fortnight later, he found her with her mum in a tiny baby playpen, literally covered in their own mess. We even wondered if that was why she wasn't house-trained...
