PUPPY WITH A KC REGISTERED PARENT BUT NOT YET FULLY CERTIFIED

Hi everyone, I’m supposed to be picking up a Kennel Club registered puppy from a breeder soon, but after doing a bit of digging, I’ve realised that while the mother is KC registered, she hasn’t actually been "confirmed" (received her official breeding clearance) yet. From what I’ve read online, if one of the parents hasn't been fully certified by the time the litter is born, the puppy can never be fully registered itself. I brought this up with the breeder, and they told me that because of COVID, they now have until 6 months after the birth to get a parent certified without it affecting the puppy's official pedigree status.

Is this actually true? Has anyone else heard about this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there, did you manage to get your dog KC registered? Like yours, my girl's sire only got his Kennel Club registration after she was born. If you did, how did you go about the process?

The mum was born in June 2019. The breeder is getting her breed certification finalised this month and I’m due to collect the puppy in August. Thanks for your replies.

    Del2244 has replied to you.

Your puppy won't be KC registered until both parents have been officially confirmed.

That’s the risk you’re taking—you might end up with a dog that won't be Kennel Club registered after it's born.

So, in theory, your pup will indeed be KC registered once the mum has been officially certified. Now, I completely understand the issues caused by the Covid pandemic, and that even the best breeders can be affected, but I’m still a bit wary of the whole thing. Will the puppy’s mum meet the breed standard? If it turns out she doesn't, you run the risk of paying a premium for a pup that isn't actually KC registered, as @del2244 pointed out... Is the breeder definitely going to get her certified? (I've seen breeders who do both registered and unregistered litters before). Covid really messed up the dog show schedule, but things have been back to normal for a while now. How old is the mum?

    SPECIAL PROVISIONS

    – BREED CONFIRMATION

Mating notifications: these can now be submitted for breeding dogs that have not yet had their official breed confirmation. Litter registrations can also be completed online.

Applications for pedigree registration of puppies from unconfirmed parents will only be processed once the parents (the sire, the dam, or both) have been officially confirmed.

Late fees for mating notifications have been waived until further notice.

I found this info on The Kennel Club’s website. Could someone help me understand exactly what it means?

Hi there, I’m not sure what the current rules are due to Covid, but you’ll need to check with The Kennel Club for the latest info. Assuming that’s true, the risk in your case is paying full pedigree prices for a puppy when the mother hasn't been officially registered or approved. This would mean your pup will never be KC registered.

You might want to get in touch with The Kennel Club for more information and to make sure the breeder is above board.

Your puppy is currently not KC registered, but once the mother has been officially approved (provided she meets the breed standard), he will be.

I was just wondering if it’s possible to get a puppy’s pedigree registration sorted if one of the parents hasn’t been fully registered, or if the parent only gets their papers finalised after the litter is born?
