My dog just lies in his bed all day

Hi everyone!

I’ve got a bit of a question - I hope it doesn't sound silly and that some of you might have the time to help me out...

I adopted a Shiba Inu two days ago (on the 23rd of January, to be precise). The breeder warned me that he might be a bit unsettled and act a bit strangely for the first few days, but I didn't expect it to be quite this dramatic.

Rory spends his whole day huddled in his bed. He won't move from it. He's eating very, very little, and will only drink if I put him right in front of his bowls. He isn't showing much interest in his toys, and it's impossible to lure him out of the bed. He doesn't react to treats, food in general, or when I try to get him to play, etc...

I'm trying to keep things in perspective because when we're out on walks, his behaviour changes completely. He perks up, becomes curious and affectionate, comes when called, and goes up to other dogs and people, etc... but as soon as we're back inside... it's back to moping in his bed.

Again, the breeder and a friend who’s a vet have assured me that this is normal, but I can't help but worry. Is there anything I can do to help him feel more settled indoors?

Thanks for reading and for any advice you might have. :)

Thanks so much for your suggestions, Doudou! :) We had our first session with the dog trainer yesterday and it really put my mind at ease. I think I’ve also been putting a lot of pressure on myself because Rory is a Shiba, and I’m so keen to get his training right... :/ Things are getting a little bit better every day. Thanks again for all your messages. 3

They’re the best "bargaining chip"! Treats come right after cuddles, playtime and kind words/praise...

Don't go overboard with the treats, though, as they catch on very quickly. They're far too clever for their own good...

    😁

    He's absolutely precious!! 🙂

With such a tiny pup, I’m out every 2 hours, especially after meals, naps, and playtime...

and I make a massive fuss (bordering on over the top, with loads of praise and cuddles) whenever he does his business outside..

Yes, patience 😁 and staying zen, especially in the morning...

Oh, a black and tan! I love that colour ^^

Don't worry, he isn't marking his territory, not at his age. There's more chance of that once he hits puberty; he's just too young to hold it in at the moment. Just be patient!

(Oh, I didn't see your request, Tania! I hope I'm not breaking any rules by double-posting, but I can't seem to add a photo using the 'edit' function :/ ) Here is Rory, who is becoming more of a little terror every day haha
