Is it normal for a dog in season to lick up her spotting?

Hi everyone,

My dog Gaia is a Shiba Inu and she's just over three years old.

Whenever she's in season, she constantly licks herself to stop any blood from dripping on the floor. Even if some does land on the ground, she’s straight there to lick it up.

Is it okay for her to be licking up the blood like this?

Do you think I should just let her carry on with it?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jordan

I think a quick trip to the vet would be the bare minimum as a precaution.

Vaginal discharge plus lethargy is really concerning.

Drinking and peeing a lot – is she maintaining her weight? You should get her blood sugar levels checked. It could be a sign of diabetes.

Alright, thanks. She’s eating a bit but drinking loads. She’s also panting; she’s suffering and is really overheated. Mind you, I’ve got air con at my place, but my mum doesn’t have it at hers...

If they’re peeing more often than usual, it’s worth seeing a vet.

She’s peeing in the house and constantly asking to go out, so I’m keeping a close eye on her.

    “and is peeing a lot”

    More than usual?

Maybe they’re a bit unsettled by all these changes, but keep a close eye on them and if you’re in any doubt, take them to the vet.

Well, she never gets them regularly. She’s licking herself at the moment but there’s no bleeding; she did lose a few drops yesterday though. She’s not eating much (especially her dry food), but she’ll eat leftovers! She’s drinking really well and peeing a lot. She’s also panting, which I reckon is down to the heat. I think she seems a bit tired, but nothing major. Mind you, we’re not at home – she’s on holiday with us at my mum’s. So, could the change of scenery be making her act like this as well?

Are her seasons regular? When was her last one?
At her age, you need to be careful; a womb infection or other similar issues can crop up.

Hi everyone, I have a female dog who is nearly ten years old. She’s been licking her private parts a lot lately and seems to want to go for a wee all the time. Yesterday she lost a bit of blood—could this just be because she's in season? Is the licking down to her being in heat? She’s also panting a lot, drinking loads of water and eating very little. Is this normal with the hot weather?

It’s perfectly safe – all the female dogs I know do it, so there’s nothing to worry about.
