Small lump on his penis

Hi everyone,

I’m probably worrying about nothing, but for a little while now my dog has been nibbling at his tail and his bum, and he occasionally nips at his balls too :/

I’ve been to see the vet who said it might just be a small itchy sore, so he had a steroid jab (I think), but nothing has changed.

I went back to the vet and we decided to give him some medication to calm him down, as she thinks it’s a behavioural issue.

But he’s still nibbling away.

Coming home from work today, I noticed two little lumps in the middle of his penis area.

I’ve no idea if this is normal or not?

If anyone could give me some advice on why he’s nibbling himself and whether this lump on his privates is normal?

This is an erection. The two lumps you’re seeing are what’s known as the 'bulbus glandis'. It’s what causes the 'tie' during mating; basically, it keeps him locked in place with the female to help with fertilisation. Anyway, don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal. If you haven’t seen it before, it’s just because your dog wasn’t particularly excited.

    Exactly.

Nothing to worry about, it’s completely normal. Usually, it’ll go down once the dog has given himself a good lick.

My Chihuahuas get these swellings at the base of their penis when they need to go for a wee. It goes back to normal afterwards.

    It’s perfectly natural.

It’s the *bulbus glandis* (often referred to as the ‘knot’).

This bulb is what causes ‘the tie’ (locking the male and female together) during mating. (I imagine it’s to prevent them from separating too soon?)

Nature is clever like that—it’s a way of ensuring successful insemination and therefore the survival of the species through reproduction.

I wonder if humans used to have this feature and lost it over time? Just like we lost the penile bone? :)

Evening, my dog has exactly the same thing as in the photo. He isn't nipping at it though, and it's definitely not an erection! His penis is all swollen and there are these two weird lumps just underneath, and they’re not his testicles. There’s nothing normal about it. I’ve got three male dogs and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen this.

Could it be an insect bite?

It’s just an erection; that part is used to lock the two dogs together during mating.

It's likely just a sting or a cyst, but it's worth seeing the vet anyway just in case, even if it shouldn't be anything serious 😉

No, it’s just an erection; the swollen parts you can see are what lock the two dogs together during mating.

It's just an erection. That 'ball' you mentioned is used to lock the penis into the female's vagina.

Hi there, The lumps you can see in the photo of your dog are the bulbus glandis. You probably know that when two dogs mate, they eventually get "tied" together and it's impossible to separate them. It’s these bulbs that cause that to happen. Basically, your dog’s bulbs are likely engorged with blood, which is almost certainly just down to him being excited. I know this is an old post, but hopefully it’ll help someone else out! 😄
