My dogs keep eating their food away from their bowls

Hi there! 🙂

I’m posting because I’m having a bit of a problem with my dogs.

The bigger one takes her dry food piece by piece over to her bed in the kitchen and eats it there.

The smaller one does the same thing but just scatters it all over the floor near her bowl—you wouldn't believe the right mess it makes! I think she’s copying the older one because she never used to do it.

What can I do to sort this out? They're getting food everywhere!

Thanks in advance and have a lovely Sunday! 🙂

Mine are the same, they prefer eating straight off the floor :)

Personally, I'm not bothered by it since they don't hide the food, they just eat it elsewhere.

Now they get their bowls twice a day, so when it's served they eat it, full stop. They used to be free-fed and they spent much more time "lugging" their food around.

Hi everyone, Don't worry, mine do exactly the same thing! I've got a five-year-old dog, and she picks up her dry food, drops it on the floor, and then eats it! We've just got a puppy who ate from her bowl for the first few days, but ever since she saw the big one doing that, she takes her dry food further away to eat it! We've tried quite a few things with the older dog (mats, lowering her bowls, etc.) but nothing seems to work! Good luck, and if you ever find a solution, I'd love to hear it!!! Lol

Have you tried putting a mat down for them while they’re eating?

I mean, are they eating on a tiled floor? Maybe they're getting cold paws! lol!

I know it sounds a bit daft, but my dog used to do the exact same thing... except he’d carry his dry food, piece by piece, from the kitchen all the way to the doormat in the hall!! He’d drop them on the mat and eat them there, making a right mess everywhere, of course! lol!!

Anyway, we ended up putting a mat down for him, and then he’d eat right next to his bowl on the mat, but still not actually from it. Still, it was an improvement because there was less distance to cover between the kitchen and the hallway, so we didn't lose as much food along the way!

    LOL!

That’s spot on, they eat like absolute pigs! ^^ Isn't it worse to give in to their whims (to me it’s just them being fussy or putting on acts)? We actually guide their heads back to the bowl and say "eat from the bowl", but they couldn't care less, clearly! lol. They must be thinking "Yeah, keep talking!" lol

My dog also puts them on the floor and eats like a "pig" lol. I just tell him calmly, "Stop eating like a pig! Eat properly," and he understands me 🤪

    Yeah, me too ^^

My dog is properly weird x)

I don't know how to change it either, even though he isn't scared of his bowl; when I put bits of meat or cheese in there, he wolfs it down.

Ah okay, I see I’m not the only one then! That’s a relief! lol.

Oh wow, right on the floor! :O

I’ve no idea how to sort it out! It’s so frustrating!

I’ve been wondering the same about mine ^^ My Border Collie eats from his bowl okay, but sometimes he takes a mouthful of dry food and carries it off to eat somewhere else, making a right mess of it obviously. My Shih Tzu is even worse, though – he refuses to eat from his bowl at all, so I have to put his dry food on the floor ^^
