Hi everyone,

We are planning to adopt a Golden Retriever soon, but before we do, we need to redo our garden fencing.

What height would you recommend?

It all depends on your dog, what motivates them... and their common sense. My Lab never jumps over my fence, which is only about 4ft high, even though I've seen her jump way higher than that ten thousand times from a standing start (like to catch a fly or grab a Frisbee mid-air)... a bit like those champion showjumpers that would never dream of jumping their own paddock fence 😅 On the other hand, she has tried to get out by digging UNDER the fence before. So, at 80cm (about 2ft 7in), your Lab will sail over it if they want to. With an electric collar, they won't. Mind you, you don't even need a physical fence in that case; you can just bury the wire.

And on top of that, I’ll be using a shock collar.

Hi, would an 80cm fence be high enough for a Labrador?

Hi, 1.5m (about 5ft) is fine if your dog isn’t prone to wandering off. Go for 2m (around 6ft 6in) if you think there’s a risk of them escaping or if your garden has quite a steep downward slope.

Thanks for all your replies! A 5ft wall plus a wooden slat (I've forgotten the name for it 🤣🤣). What do you think?

I need to get some fencing up as well... I’m going for 5ft (1.53m) rigid panels...

Hi there, We’ve got a 6ft fence at our place – Goldens aren’t exactly pro jumpers, so you can definitely get away with 5ft. It’s also worth checking what your local council regulations are.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s best to have a fence that’s as high as your dog when they’re standing on their hind legs—think about how high they are when they jump up to your shoulders. Obviously, for a dachshund, you wouldn’t just have a 40cm fence; you’d go for a standard 4ft one. But for a large dog, you’ll definitely need to go higher. For my Beaucerons, the fence is 5ft high. Ideally, use rigid panels or even a wall.
