Wound reopening after some stitches were removed

Hi everyone!

I've got an appointment with the vet this afternoon but I'd really like some reassurance :/

My dog has been stitched up three times now following surgery on his leg due to a fracture.

On Wednesday, the vet decided to remove some of the stitches and leave the rest in.

But I've noticed the wound is opening up again :/

Do you think this is normal? Will he have to be stitched up yet again?

Thanks for your help!

What with the pain the dog has to endure and the risk of infection, I wouldn’t stand for having to wait that long...

I’m with Quiz on this; the wound is quite nasty and there’s a real risk of infection, not to mention he must be in a lot of pain. When my dog was attacked, my vet saw him straight away as an emergency to stitch him up. Isn’t your vet being a bit lax?

The wound opened on Wednesday and you can't see your vet until Monday? Why can't they see you before then? Your dog needs urgent care. Is there not another vet nearby? The wound actually opened today. The vet removed some of the stitches on Wednesday.

    No, the wound opened today.

On Wednesday we went to have some of the stitches removed.

What an absolute mess! Was it a mistake by the vet or a lack of aftercare? Is he on antibiotics and painkillers at least?
We’ve followed the vet’s instructions to the letter. Betadine once a day, and he's not allowed to move—he has to stay on a lead or in a crate, and only goes out to do his business. We’re doing our best, but unfortunately, since he managed to pull some of his stitches out on Wednesday, it's opened up there :/

In my opinion, that’s not right; you should give the vet a call to see what they think. Doesn't he have a cone on to stop him from licking it? Yes, he’s got a cone on, luckily. But I think it’s opened back up because the vet took some of the stitches out on Wednesday (it had been two weeks). :/

Yeah, I thought it didn't seem right either!

It's been two weeks since he was stitched up, and I think when the vet removed the stitches where he thought he could, the rest just kept coming apart :/

He's not been active at all; we were told to keep him on a lead and only take him out for toilet breaks :/

The vet can't see us until Monday morning, either. For now, we're applying some Betadine, and luckily he's on antibiotics.

    I really hope he'll be okay :(

I was thinking the exact same thing as Misanthrope! It looks like the vet's done a bit of a rush job and it doesn't look great at all... He must be in a lot of pain, which is why he needs painkillers and you'll have to keep a close eye on it for infection.

What on earth happened here? It looks like a right butcher's job! Was it a mistake by the vet or just a lack of proper aftercare? Is he on antibiotics and painkillers at least?
