Neutered dog and sexual urges

Hi everyone,

We recently adopted (2 weeks ago) a 2-year-old Brittany Spaniel cross from a rescue centre and we've run into a few issues.

As is standard practice, he's been neutered, but the problem is that since yesterday he's started humping the cushions... what can I do to make it stop? I thought the fact he was castrated would have sorted this problem out.

At the moment, I'm putting him in the hallway so that he's ignored and the behaviour isn't reinforced...

Also, for the time being, all our walks are on the lead, but he pulls and pulls and pulls. I'm not really that motivated to teach him to walk on a lead properly, given he's a Brittany and they naturally need to run around and sniff everything in sight...

Cheers

I can confirm that mounting isn't a "sexual urge". I'll link you to these articles on the subject if you're interested: http://adcanes.fr/le-chevauchement/ http://adcanes.fr/le-chevauchement-bis/ .

As for lead walking, if you don't work on it, it’s going to be a struggle to teach him.

Does your dog have a good recall? For a proper walk, you really need to be able to let your dog off-lead (or use a long line if off-lead isn't possible). Once he's burnt off some energy, he'll be much more receptive.

    Hi Manupatalo,

Mounting, even if that’s what it looks like, isn’t necessarily a sexual behaviour. Neutering might reduce this behaviour but it won’t always make it stop altogether.

Actually, to be quite precise, a study on the behavioural effects of neutering* shows the following results:

    Urine marking, roaming, mounting

    - reduction of around 50% for 60% of dogs / reduction of around 90% for 25 to 40% of dogs.

    Aggressive behaviour

    - significant reduction for a third of dogs.

According to the RSPCA vet, he’s two years old and was neutered at two (about a month to a month and a half ago).

And how old was he when he was neutered?

Just as an aside, even though neutering dampens their sex drive, it doesn't stop certain functions.

(My Australian Shepherd was neutered at 6 months, so he never really showed any sexual urges, which makes sense given how young he was. Well, that doesn't stop him from acting as a "love slave" for my spaniel twice a year for about three days when she’s desperate for a male. She’s shown him the ropes and he doesn't seem to mind keeping her happy at all—quite the opposite, in fact...) 🙄
