Why does my dog keep lying by the front door?

I’ve noticed my dog lying in the hallway by the front door quite a few times now, and I just don’t get it. He’s got plenty of other places to go, especially his big, comfy bed, but he still chooses to lie there.

You can pop some water bottles in the freezer and put them under his bedding so he doesn't get freezer burn. That’s what I do for Gandhy and honestly, he quite likes it and won't budge from his spot!

My dog does the same thing; he stands guard to keep an eye on all the visitors. Plus, because they’re stairs, he’s higher up. As long as he moves when you tell him to or when you arrive, that’s the main thing – it proves he isn't trying to dominate you in that sense.

Hi there. You're right—if he was doing that just to get your attention by lying in the way, he wouldn't do it at night when he's on his own. It’s much more likely that he's looking for a cool spot, even if it means ditching his big comfy bed!

Yeah, when I tell him to go to his bed he does go, but he’s got a big thick cushion so I reckon he gets too warm in it. At night I hear him getting up and lying on the floor near the sofa, next to the balcony door, or even by the front door I think.

Yeah, it’s probably the cool he’s after, because if he goes to his spot when you tell him to... I reckon with the weather we’re having, he’s just loving the cool... :)

Némo is doing the same as Emmanuellev's Basset Hound... he lies down in front of the door on the tiles to get some cool on his tummy...

My Basset Hound used to sprawl right out in front of the front door as well. His bed was making him too hot, so he enjoyed the cool tiles by the door... Maybe that’s it, is he feeling too hot?

Right, don't let him lie in the middle of walkways; it's just his way of getting noticed. Mine used to do that too until the day I didn't see him and I had a right tumble. So now, the hallways and doorways are strictly off-limits.

Oh yeah, if I tell him "go to your bed", he goes. And no, I don't step over him, and he doesn't stand in the way when someone's leaving either.

He’s probably just keeping watch... When you ask him to move, does he actually do it?
