Hi everyone, I'm looking for a specific type of dog that I've never come across before. Based on my research, it's supposedly an American Pit Bull Terrier, 'black panther' type. I've attached some photos to show you what I mean.
Is that the correct name for the breed?
And where would I be able to get a dog like this?
Thanks in advance for the help..

Not only is it not the ancestor, but it’s essentially the same dog anyway. At the end of the day, it’s all a matter of how the dog fancy “manufactures” things; plenty of people want to differentiate these dogs by size, colour, and especially by the colour of their nose and slightly by their coat colour. Having known one of the former Bull breed importers – not that idiot Antoine Paynet... here in France, I can confirm it’s the same dog. The Staffy can indeed have solid colours like white or black... but it’s strange because in Ireland, the coat can also be brown – or rather, “red nose” – but the thing is, red nose is immediately seen as a Pit Bull and black nose is a Staffy. So it’s exactly what I’m saying: people want to tell them apart based primarily on the colour of their nose, their coat, or their general look. Changing the name of the dog, or the breed for that matter, isn’t going to change much; its origins, ancestors, and parents will always be the same. As for the Boston Terrier – coming from Bull Terrier and Frenchie parents – personally, that just gives you a Bull Terrier type and not a hybrid. The only thing I find impressive is the number of names they carry, I’ll give you that, but in no way is the dog called a Staffy the ancestor of other Bull breeds. You might as well say the Scottish Bulldog-Terrier is the ancestor of the Pit Bull, right? And that famous Brazilian dog with Boxer and Bull Terrier parents – not to be confused with the Fila Brasileiro, the Dogo Guatemalteco, or Amos’s Red-Tiger Bulldogs and plenty of others, just like the English Terrier and many other Molossers... The dog’s name changes, but its parents will always be the same. A word to the wise. And the Bull Terrier arrived in the USA before 1800, pretty much at the start of the slave trade... there was also the Brazilian Mastiff...
Evening, the only 'English Staff' I know of is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which comes in solid black, red, or with white markings.
As for the breed's history, it’s a very old one; it's the ancestor of the AmStaff, the Pit Bull, the Bull Terrier, and so on...
There’s someone on here who owns one, a very handsome black one ( @Hibou'Riquet ) ...
Otherwise, there’s a very interesting book on the four 'Bull & Terrier' breeds, but it’s practically impossible to find; it’s a numbered edition that traces the origins of these iconic dogs. Don’t necessarily trust everything you read online about these breeds, as you can find some absolute rubbish about how they came about. It’s a bit of a laugh to read, but it’s a long way from the truth...
You could either get an Amstaff, maybe a half-black White Rock type, or the dog called an English Staffy which comes in solid black. Anyway, a dog with that Amstaff look is really just a Bull Terrier (whether people like it or not); they have so many different names that even a casual enthusiast wouldn't know them all, as the Bull Terrier has more than half a dozen names and nicknames. Nowadays, they're often black and called American Bullies, which are nothing more or less than a Bull Terrier. If you look at the origins of the Bull Terrier and other names like Boston Terriers and Pitbulls, and compare the parent breeds with what you see people walking in the street, it makes sense: you're looking at Terrier and Mastiff, Bandog, Bulldog, and so on. Best of luck—it took me about 15 years to see the logic. That’s certainly not the case for the useless lot at the Kennel Club and outfits like the RSPCA, who’ve taken nearly 100 years to finally wake up. Good luck telling the difference between a white Mastiff puppy and a white Staffy puppy and all the rest.
Hi @Cimino33, it’s true that the post sparked quite a debate... In the end, did you find your dream dog?
Apart from that breed, which is rarely seen outside the US, there are other similar breeds that might match what you’re looking for. Cane Corsos and AmStaffs, for instance. They are imposing breeds but with a very well-defined look and behavioural traits that have been refined over generations... Plus, they’re much easier to find from a reputable breeder!
Hi everyone, sorry for the late reply. I’d like to thank everyone for their comments.
I was working on the assumption that it's common sense that an animal, or any living thing for that matter, isn’t an object... I agree that my wording is probably to blame if you take it literally. When you're just typing quickly, it never even crossed my mind that anyone would think I'd see an animal as something like a car or any other possession. Regarding the legal side, I know pets aren't banned, but there are definitely safety measures that need to be followed, as one of you pointed out in the replies. Thanks again! :)
Yeah... I can just see Cimino’s future 'Black Panther' with a little silver bracelet on its paws... 😁 Mind you, I think a spiked collar would suit that dog a bit more... anyway, we’ve all certainly discovered a surprising new breed here: the Black Panther Pit Bull with neon yellow eyes... I should probably get one myself to send after the kids when they refuse to tidy their rooms... I’m sure that would sort them out in five seconds flat...
