What do you think of those Italian ham bones?

Evening, My husband came home all pleased with himself last week because he’d picked up an Italian ham bone for the dog. As I’m always a bit wary of giving bones, I decided to check some reviews, and on Zooplus, plenty of people were saying it gave their dogs diarrhoea and vomiting. A couple of owners even said their dogs' jowls tripled in size, leading to expensive vet bills... According to some vets, these bones are poison and shouldn't even be on the market. At first I was going to bin it, then I thought about just scraping the ham off, but then I read about the benefits of BARF and wondered if it was a similar sort of thing? Please don't bite my head off if I'm wrong, I don't know much about raw feeding. Anyway, what do you reckon? Should I give it to him, just scrape off the ham, or is it best off in the bin? Thanks for your help!

I’ve always fed my dogs good quality grain-based dry food, although with a low grain percentage. I’ve had many dogs over the years, and my current ones digest this dry food perfectly well. I’ve never had any issues, so I don’t see why I’d change... all my dogs have lived to be 10 to 12 years old, or even older, without any stomach problems. I’m not changing a thing, regardless of what anyone says about this or that brand. As for bones, every three months or so I go to the butcher's to get a big marrow bone. I only let them have it for one day and then I bin it. Anyway, I hope sharing my experience helps you out...

Thanks, honestly it seems like we just don’t know what kind of bones to give dogs anymore. Some people used to say we should favour rawhide chews over others because they were less dangerous, and now it’s the exact opposite.

As for raw bones, some people say "yes" to every type of bone without exception—I’m thinking of the BARF diet—but then vets say they’re seeing more cases since people started feeding BARF because of raw chicken bones ending up perforating the stomach... I’m totally lost and don’t know what bones to give my dog anymore!

It’s the same with food; they tell you not to give them cheap, grain-heavy dry food anymore, yet you often read that you can give a dog rice to help with their digestion...

My vet didn’t try to push his own brand of kibble on me just to get a commission, but he did recommend a senior supermarket dry food even though I told him my dog was having digestive issues and was gassy all the time... when you listen to a pro, you assume they must know what they’re talking about, but since I’ve been reading about nutrition on this site, everything is being called into question.

I really don’t know what to think about BARF anymore. Even though I’m tempted by the diet, I don’t want to risk a bowel blockage for my dog. Plus, I’m not sure if BARF is suitable for older dogs, and I’m just as confused about the bones... it’s so hard for an ordinary owner to know what’s best for their dog in terms of value for money, especially when you’re on a tight budget and facing such a flood of contradictory information!!!!!

Watch out for those rawhide bones – I've heard they can splinter, so they're not great.

Thanks, they’re going in the bin then. Never mind, he’ll just have his usual rawhide bones as per usual....

If you’re worried, don’t give it to him! Besides, there are some bad reviews. It’s not worth him getting ill over a bone, and then you'd have the trip to the vet on top of that! Just buy him another toy instead!

Ham, smoked salmon, crisps, olives, and generally anything salty should be avoided. You should also be careful with games at the beach—don't let your dog play fetch with a ball that’s soaked in seawater, for instance. Salt is incredibly dangerous and can even be fatal for your dog. The reaction can be similar to what happens if a dog eats chocolate or coffee. If you notice any symptoms, take them to an emergency vet straight away.

My Beauceron got through it quickly with no trouble at all, but I won't be giving her any more after seeing the same comments you did (too salty, dangerous...).
