Urine smell on tiled floors

Hi everyone, I’m having a bit of a problem.

I’ve got a puppy who is nearly 4 months old, so we’re right in the middle of house-training. During the day, we hardly have any accidents; he either goes on the patio or when I take him for a walk (3 to 4 times a day). However, even though I take him out just before bed and first thing when I wake up, he still has 2 or 3 accidents during the night (by the way, if you have any tips for nighttime house-training, I’m all ears, but no crate training please).

My flat has tiled floors and even with cleaning and disinfecting, the urine smell has soaked into the grout... I vacuum and mop once a day as I’m a bit of a clean freak, and it’s only got worse since I’ve been pregnant lol.

I’ve tried using Dettol, which worked well at first, but I can still smell it and it’s making me feel quite nauseous, even though I know it's not my little guy’s fault.

Do you have any miracle tips that actually get rid of the smell? And do you have any advice for keeping a flat smelling fresh when you have pets?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I use white vinegar too. Bicarbonate of soda is also really effective as a deodoriser.

You can find recipes by searching Google for "homemade vinegar and bicarb deodoriser".

Yes, white vinegar is brilliant – I even use an old toothbrush to help scrub the grout properly.

Just be patient; he’s only 4 months old, so it’s still early days for him to be house-trained at night. Some people take their puppy out during the night, but I’ve never done that myself 😁

I've just given it a go and it’s definitely helped with the odour! I think I’ll do it again tomorrow, and in future, I’ll clean up with this whenever there’s a wee. Thanks!

    Hi there,

In my opinion, the best deodoriser is white vinegar. The ones sold as commercial household products can be quite scented. You can use it as much as you like to clean everything around the house – it’s absolute magic! 😉
