My dog (a Griffon cross) loves playing with squeaky balls like these

Swallowed rubber toy

.

On Saturday, she was chewing it for a while and shredded it, but I didn't think she'd actually swallow it; I couldn't get it away from her in time :(. That’s the last time I’m letting her play with those. The ball was purple and white.

She’s drinking and eating normally, playing, and seems her usual self. She was a bit constipated last night, but she had a big poo this morning. Her stools were a bit hard, so I think the bits are starting to come out!

People tell me not to worry as dogs eat all sorts of things... but I can't help feeling anxious. I’ve read all sorts of things online and I’m scared of what might happen to her.

I called the vet this morning. He said not to worry too much, as she’s a medium-sized dog (around 40-44 lbs), it should be fine, but it’s better to get her a scan to check if everything has passed. We have an appointment at 3.45pm.

I’d rather get it checked just to put my mind at rest.

The vet isn't worried, Enya doesn’t have a temperature. She was sick on the walk we went on after the vet visit. A big chunk of the ball came back up the same way it went in. He said I should give her some asparagus; apparently, it’s full of fibre and wraps around foreign bodies. Strange kind of medicine! She’s going to have diarrhoea, so he said not to worry. If she gets any worse by the end of the week, I’ll have to take her back to the vet.

I hope she doesn’t start trying to eat everything she comes across, otherwise I’m going to have some sleepless nights with her! 😯 I didn’t take your comment the wrong way, it’s just that I feel so guilty. For giving her that toy and not realising it was dangerous. For not managing to get it away from her in time... I need a toy that really grabs her attention while I’m doing some training with her, because treats just don't have the same effect as squeaky toys. Oh well, I’ll have to find another trick!

Yeah, I can well imagine the squeaky toys attract them (we even have a laugh with them in the shop ourselves lol). Don't worry, we all make mistakes. The main thing is that you noticed it and that your girl is healthy and has passed everything.

We only saw one side of things, but there we are. Please don't take it the wrong way. But you know, accidents can happen even without toys; the important thing is that you were concerned enough to act quickly...

A dog belonging to my partner's parents (a Golden Retriever) once swallowed a tea towel. My mother-in-law hadn't seen him do it; she just noticed he’d stopped eating and rushed him to the vet, and that's when she found out he'd eaten a tea towel...

Once, a family friend's dog pinched a sock off my sister when she was a baby on my mum's lap and swallowed it. My mum didn't realise straight away—it was a good 5 minutes later, when we saw my sister only had one sock on and it wasn't on the floor, that we realised the dog had nicked it right off her foot and eaten it...

I really hope she won't need an operation and that it’ll just pass through naturally, but I’ve been terrified of poisoning, a bowel blockage, and goodness knows what else has been going through my head. I wanted to post this as a warning; these balls come in various sizes, but I think they’re just too flimsy. Enya loves squeaky toys and soft balls, but I won’t be giving her any more—it’s just too much worry. She managed to tear apart a tennis ball which I’ve since thrown away; I really should have known better.

Hi, I actually saw those balls at the pet shop on Saturday. My partner said he wouldn't get them, to be honest. For a Golden Retriever puppy (which is what we're after, just to give you an idea of the size), they aren't big enough and there's a risk he might swallow them. Anyway, you did the right thing booking an appointment with the vet. Maybe have another look at the size of his toys to see if he really could swallow them or not... You could always check out Kong toys.
