Surgery for an elderly dog

Hi everyone, I’m really worried. My dog is having surgery tomorrow; she’s 15 years and 10 days old (she’s a small dog, about 14 lbs). It’s for a tumour that has ruptured on her back, just above her right leg. The operation should take about twenty minutes; the vet will remove the growth, stitch her up, and then the stitches will come out 15 days later. What scares me most is the anaesthetic and the thought that she might never wake up. Has anyone else been through surgery with an older dog? How did it go?

Hi, my 15-year-old dog has a grade 2 slipped disc. At the moment he’s on medication, but I’m wondering whether it might be too late for surgery further down the line.

Evening Elowk, if your vet has suggested the surgery then they must be confident, but I completely understand your apprehension. Do let us know how it goes on Friday – hoping for some good news! 👌

Good evening, well I guess it’s my turn now. My dog, who is 15 years and 8 months old, has to have surgery this Friday for a ruptured cruciate ligament. He already had this operation back in 2018 on his other leg. My daughter and I have made the decision to go ahead with it for his own sake; he’s limping and it’s really no life for him. But we’re both so stressed—we’re just terrified of losing him.

Thanks for reading, it’s done me the world of good just to write this down.

    Have a lovely evening.

Evening all, Thank you for your message. When I got home from work, I took my girl in my arms and she let me know she was in pain. I couldn't leave her in that state. The vet saw her straight away; she was absolutely lovely. I made the decision right then and there. I know she had a wonderful life with us and our family. I didn't want her to suffer at all. Today she went to doggy heaven, even though my heart is so heavy right now not seeing her by my side at breakfast or when we’re relaxing in the evening. But I know that where she is now, she’s been reunited with her cousin who passed away a year ago.
