Small dog mating with a big one. Is it possible?

Hi everyone,

I couldn't find anything on Google so I thought I'd ask here :)

First of all, I want to clarify that I'm not looking to breed any litters; I'm just really interested in animal genetics.

It's all in the title, really: I'd like to know if mating between a small dog and a large dog can actually be successful? If so, what would the puppies look like? Are there any potential risks?

I'm just picturing a tiny dog trying to mount a big one, it's quite a funny thought! 😂

Oh, definitely – instinct wins every time! 😂 I’ve seen crossbreeds where the size difference wasn't that massive. I've also seen a female who ended up being much bigger than her mum 😯

Hi, Dogs are capable of all sorts of tactics and acrobatics when it comes to mating. It might be unlikely, but it’s certainly not impossible. As for the risks, they’re related to the mating process; if a large female gets restless during the act, she can cause a fracture of the male’s penis bone (this can actually happen even between dogs of a similar size, too).

Regarding mating, yeah, it’s definitely possible with a bit of effort! ^^

As for the end result, that all depends on the parents.

No litter is risk-free; it requires proper pregnancy monitoring.

It would have been much more dangerous if the male was large and the female was small.

There’s also the final outcome to think about; the puppies might not have a balanced or risk-free growth if one breed is slow-growing and the other is fast-growing... not to mention potential genetic health issues.
