Side effects of steroid treatment

Hi everyone, I have a 3-year-old female Husky who has been on steroid tablets for nearly 4 months. She has an inflammatory liver condition of unknown cause (likely poisoning). She is slowly getting better, but the side effects of the steroids are very prominent; she's urinating a lot and is even having accidents in the house once or twice a day. (It used to be 3 or 4 times a day, but since the dose was lowered, it's down to 1 or 2 accidents in the house). We have tried several things including taking her out frequently, restricting her water, and even dog nappies, but the nappies were overflowing every time. \/p>

\/p>

We feel like her incontinence is never going to stop, despite the vet's advice.\/p>

\/p>

Has anyone else experienced anything similar, and did everything eventually go back to normal?\/p>

\/p>

Thanks!\/p>

Hi there! Yes, I’ve been through something very similar with my Chihuahua; she has severe mitral valve disease and also struggled with inflammation. We were given **prednisolone syrup**, and honestly, it worked wonders. She had a really nasty cough, had lost her appetite, and was tired all the time... With the prednisolone, her cough has almost gone, she’s got her spark back and she’s eating like a little piglet now 😂 As for the accidents, she did have some leaking at the start (thanks to the steroids...), but by slowly reducing the dose and getting her toilet breaks timed right, it’s really improved. Hang in there, it takes time, but things can get better ❤️

Hi everyone, My dog Maddie is also on steroids; she has an autoimmune disease affecting her platelets. She’s also constantly thirsty and urinating a lot. After a few months, she developed stomach ulcers which led to an internal haemorrhage. She was on a lot of meds at the time, especially painkillers. Two weeks ago, she had a blood transfusion. Thankfully, she’s doing better now. Her red blood cell count has gone up, but she’s still a bit anaemic (it’s only been a short while, so her body hasn't had time to regenerate all those cells yet). After the transfusion, she got her appetite back (her steroids were being given by injection at the time). Now that she's back on her tablets, I feel like she’s going off her food again; maybe she doesn’t like the taste of the treatment. We have to give her the steroids for her condition, there’s likely no other way... Has anyone had a similar experience or got any advice to give?

Hello, My vet has prescribed a course of steroids for my dog and the side effects are horrendous: he’s constantly thirsty and weeing huge amounts... I’m at my wits' end and I’m wondering how long this is going to last. I think it’s totally unacceptable that my vet didn’t warn me about this. I’m definitely going to have a word with them because if anything happens to my dog... thanks in advance for any advice! I’ve tried using dog nappies but he just pulls them off.

Yes, and very often the dog ends up covered in oedema in the long run; poor little fella. Mind you, herbal medicine can't cure everything, but you can trust Enicia.

I spent ages looking for natural, effective remedies to help with the side effects of the medication my previous (incompetent) vet prescribed. Today, I’m sharing my find: Green World (Biophytonature on their website). Their pet range is quite new, I think, but it’s really effective. And as for the ingredients – I can’t fault them at all! I’m sharing the link so you can go and see for yourselves. It’s not even that expensive, especially as it’s made in France!! http://www.biophytonature.com/fr/# Let me know what you think – for me, once I tried it, I was sold!!!

Hi... Well, my dog had major liver issues, he was struggling to digest anything and his blood results were poor. I switched him to BARF—a very digestible raw-meat-based diet (you can find plenty of info on raw feeding websites)—and he was doing much better. That said, his levels were still poor, so a vet gave me some cortisone tablets. It really took a toll on his kidney function, and since he’s an older dog, it was a real worry—the liver can regenerate but the kidneys can't... A while later, my dog had a bad reaction to a flea tablet, and I wonder if the side effects from that were what caused those catastrophic liver levels in the first place. My advice, which I got from other professionals, is to only use cortisone if they are in extreme pain. I only gave it for a fortnight instead of the month prescribed; it causes huge kidney problems and the side effects are devastating. For end-of-life care, yes, cortisone can help a poor pup when there’s nothing else you can do, but for liver-related inflammation, I’d recommend switching to raw food and supplementing with homeopathic anti-inflammatory tablets. Things like desmodium, devil’s claw and milk thistle were really effective for my dog. There are some great holistic pet health sites out there with advice, or you could try seeing a homeopathic vet; it’ll do your dog the world of good. Anyway... I'm sure he'll be feeling much better with all that!
