Hi everyone,

What are your thoughts on a Pinscher Chihuahua cross puppy? I'd love to hear what you think.

We live in a house with two young children and two cats.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

What a gorgeous little wolf he is.

Daily walks are just as good for the big humans as they are for the little ones 😂 #BritishHeartFoundation

You shouldn't focus too much on other people's good or bad experiences.

A Chihuahua-Pinscher cross is energetic, that’s a given. If people tell you things like "he barks too much", "he's not house-trained", or "he chews everything", you have to ask: what is his lifestyle like?

Beyond genetic predisposition, it’s the environment and upbringing that really shape a dog’s behaviour.

I’ll be working Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm, but I’ll be popping back home every day at lunchtime. We’ll also be around at the weekend. The reason we want to get a dog is that we’ll definitely have the time to dedicate to it, taking it for walks outside of the garden, of course. I’ve included a photo, thanks for your thoughts!

Hi there, As has been said, you really need to consider how much time and energy you can realistically commit... Let's be honest, with two toddlers, maybe you were looking for a little dog that stays indoors, loves a cuddle, and just does its business in the garden... But a dog that never leaves the house and only ever goes in the garden leads a pretty sad life... Plenty of people have dogs that never get further than the back garden, and they spend their whole lives being bored... An energetic little dog like that will need to get out for at least an hour a day in various locations (going to the same park every time isn't exactly stimulating and gets boring fast). So, only you can know if that’s doable with your lifestyle, or if you just won't have the time or the energy... A dog that hasn't burned off enough energy becomes frustrated; they can start barking compulsively or become so hyper that they end up being shut in another room because they’re unmanageable... We tend to think of these small dogs as just "lap dogs", but they enjoy going for walks, sniffing around, and running just as much as big dogs do... If you feel that getting the dog out for an hour a day alongside looking after young children isn't possible in terms of time and organisation, no one would blame you... A dog, no matter how small, takes time and energy...

These are the questions you need to ask yourself for any dog! How long is he going to be left on his own once you're back at work? How much time will you have to set aside EVERY DAY for walks? (You can't just rely on the garden to exercise a dog), etc.

Yes, we’re ready to get a puppy 😊 I’m free at the moment, but I start work in January. Is this the kind of dog that won't get bored during the day when he’s on his own? Do you think the crossbreed could be a good idea then? Thanks.

There’s one in my area who’s very, very energetic and a bit of a madcap. He’s friendly with other dogs—a bit too much, actually—which is a bit of a problem for my girl as she just wants some peace and quiet (he charges right at her and she soon puts him in his place ^^). If you’ve got enough time to help them burn off all that energy (cycling, jogging, etc.), they’re a lovely cross, but you really do need to be available for them, otherwise that's when you’ll run into trouble.

So the question is, are you really ready to take on a puppy with all the extra work that entails? And do you want a very high-energy dog?

Hi there, it’s not that he isn’t a "top" dog or that this crossbreed is a problem; it’s more about whether you’re a good match for this type of dog. A Pinscher x Chi is likely to be a very energetic little dog—a real little live wire! ^^ What you really need to consider is whether that suits your lifestyle. Are you ready, with two toddlers, to spend a lot of time looking after a dog—basic care, training, and walks several times a day, all year round? And that’s not counting the first year or two where there are even more toilet breaks (every two hours on average), plus any potential mischief and so on.

Chihuahuas and Pinschers are stubborn, high-energy little dogs that need plenty of exercise and interaction. Obviously, you’ve got to look at the temperament of both parents, but I’d say their training is really down to you. If you’re not feeling it, then it’s probably best not to take the plunge. Always trust your gut.

I've got both at home, a Pinscher cross and a Chihuahua, and they’re a lively pair! Luckily, they love a long walk just as much as snoozing on the sofa under a blanket :-D
