Hi everyone,

What are your thoughts on a Pinscher Chihuahua cross puppy? I'd love to hear what you think.

We live in a house with two young children and two cats.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I definitely see it with my own, especially my Chihuahua. When the weather is rubbish and he doesn't get out enough (just quick toilet breaks, no proper walks), he’s a right pain...

I'll be working Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. I'll be coming home every lunchtime and then we'll be around at the weekend. The reason we want to get a dog is because we’ll have the time to dedicate to taking him for walks outside of the garden, of course. I've attached a photo, let me know what you think. Reading your reply, I get the impression you mainly want a dog to take for walks at the weekend? But it’s essential to take a dog out every single day, otherwise they’re very likely to develop behavioural issues... it's the only way for them to express their boredom and distress! He’s got such a lovely little face, this little fella... No, not at all – it’s not just weekend walks. We’ll be taking him for walks outside the garden in the evening after work too. During the week, an evening walk just isn't enough. You need to walk them morning, noon, and night for at least 30 minutes each time, with the chance to let them off-lead to have a proper run. Otherwise, he’s going to be miserable. Having a garden is just a nice little bonus; it's not enough to properly tire a dog out.

Whether it’s this one or another, it doesn’t really matter. A puppy needs love, proper training and patience, and it’s down to you and only you to turn that puppy into a lovely companion or a little “monster”.

Hi there, well, I’m speaking from personal experience here. If you’re already worried about how lively a Chi/Pinscher cross is, then definitely don't go for a Jack Russell – they are on a completely different level, easily 1,000 times more energetic than the little beauty you showed us.

My boy Koda is a Jack Russell, nearly 8 months old now, and let me tell you, he’s a proper handful! He’s lovely and kind, very sweet and affectionate, that much is true. But in terms of exercise, it would be absolutely impossible to only take him out at the weekend or just for one evening stroll. No, he *needs*—and I really mean NEEDS—to get out, go to the woods, track scents, run, and learn. I spend hours with him outside of work, and while he is a brilliant dog, I can't tell you how much work it takes. Even though he's "only" a crossbreed, apart from his colour, the energy is definitely all there. We do at least 9 or 10 miles a day (keeping the walks to a reasonable length for now) and once he’s fully grown, we’ll be doing much more than that. I split the exercise into several walks so I don't wreck his joints, which doesn't seem possible for you, and on the days I can, I take him into work with me. So, I’d definitely advise against a Jack Russell, at least given your current circumstances 😊

    Best, Kodadou

Reading your reply, it sounds to me like you're mainly looking to get a dog to take it for walks at the weekend?

But you absolutely must take a dog out for a proper walk every single day, not just leave them in the garden. Otherwise, there's a real risk they'll start showing behavioural issues... it's the only way for them to express their boredom and distress!

He’s got such a lovely face, this little guy...

If you're hesitant because a Pinscher cross is a bit too high-energy, then forget about getting a Jack Russell!

Thanks everyone, I just can't make up my mind because we've fallen for either this one or a Jack Russell puppy...
