Neutered dog mating?

Hi everyone,

I need some help with a particular issue. I have two small dogs, a male and a female. The male was neutered at a local rescue centre last year and we’ve had him for a year now.

For the past two days, the male has been mating with the female (three times in two days). I’ve heard that this can happen, but I was wondering if it’s normal for it to be this frequent.

Can anyone shed some light on this??

Thanks in advance!

That’s a very good question actually, Tania... Will the bulb swell without ejaculation? Does the famous ‘tie’ still happen?

I’ve no idea, but I’d be inclined to think not, as that normally happens in the final stage after ejaculation.

Dogs don't really have any taboos. Sexual behaviour is just a response to a primal instinct, which I reckon can go a long way in helping their relationships stay balanced.

You have to see it as a bit of play—an activity that's just as normal as eating and sleeping.

You shouldn't try to step in until the male has finished, as you risk causing a penile fracture or injuring the dog. You absolutely must not try to force them apart. The female could also end up getting hurt.

    Hi

I’m not so sure about saying it’s brilliant for a dog’s well-being; I’ve got my doubts.

Until my old girl had her op, my neutered male would mate with her for three days straight every six months. There’s obviously no harm in that at all.

Hi, that’s actually a great thing. It’s lucky that when they get the chance, neutered dogs can still mate. As for the frequency, he’s young, so it’s perfectly normal. Right, so I should just let them get on with it? Is there no risk of injury or anything? I’ve seen some people say they separate them, but it makes me feel a bit sad for them.. 😔
