My puppy gulps down her dry food and then vomits

Evening all,

My puppy (nearly 5 months old) just gulps down her dry food without chewing. She’s finished her meal in less than 30 seconds.

She has just brought up all of her food. I think it’s because she’s eating way too fast and isn’t chewing at all.

Do you think I could switch her over to adult dry food so that she has to chew? :s

Thanks in advance.

Don’t just leave your pup to their own devices in front of their food bowl!

    > Sit yourself down quietly with their meal on your lap, and hand it out slowly, bit by bit, with plenty of pauses. Stop the feeding—and stop moving altogether, for that matter—whenever they start scoffing down what you’ve just put in the bowl.

Hi everyone, my 3-month-old Border Collie pup scoffs his dry food in record time, but he doesn't throw up. Whether the kibble is small or large, it doesn't make any difference. I've tried a slow feeder bowl but nothing changes; as soon as the food hits his mouth, he swallows it whole without even chewing. He eats on his own now in a quiet spot away from everyone else, but it still hasn't helped. So, I’m sure you can imagine what happens, but as soon as it comes out the other end, well, he eats his own poo just as quickly... On the plus side, the garden stays clean lol... but from a hygiene point of view, it’s not ideal, and it can’t be very good for his system. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance! (Just for some context, before we adopted him, there were six of them all eating from the same bowl...)

Hi everyone, My little girl has just lost her first tooth! :D Do you think that could be what caused her diarrhoea? I’ve been giving her some rice, carrots and a bit of mash, and her poo is gradually getting back to normal. Thanks for all your advice! :)

What if you soak them to make it a bit like wet food?

    Hi again!

What's the normal temperature for a dog? I'm not sure.

If she vomits up her dry food, should I let her eat it if she wants to?!

Hi there, The dry food is indeed coming back up whole. And then of course she’s hungry again :p We’re going to try the ball-in-the-bowl trick – and yes, her bowl is already raised up. Scattering the dry food is a great idea. I’ll give all your suggestions a go. :) She was a bit poorly last night and had diarrhoea a few times. I think she’s just caught a bit of a bug. She’s full of beans now, though! We gave her some rice during the night.

Another great idea is to put the dry food in a special treat ball so your puppy has to work to get it out himself. It takes a bit of time, but at least he won't be wolfing it down.

If your puppy is being sick, it’s because he’s scoffing his food, not because it's supermarket dry food...

It happens quite often, and if the kibble pieces are small, it doesn't help. We’re not really talking about vomiting here, but rather regurgitation after eating; it usually stems from a lesion or a malfunction of the pharynx or the oesophagus, regardless of the brand of dry food. Basically, your dog is just being a bit of a greedy guts.

You can get these types of bowls, but I find them a bit useless for puppies (except maybe the second one). Your best bet is to split his meals into smaller portions and try to slow down his eating. That way, his stomach isn't overloaded and the food goes down much better.
