My dog won't eat or go for walks after being spayed

Hi everyone,

My dog was spayed three days ago and now she's refusing to eat what's in her bowl. It’s the exact same dry food as before! I also tried giving her some rice; she started eating it but didn’t finish it. The strange thing is, she was eating perfectly fine the first two days after coming back from her operation! However, she’s still acting hungry and will happily gobble up any treats I give her! The second issue is that she doesn't want to go for walks anymore. I thought maybe she’s scared of ending up back at the vet, but as soon as there’s a chance to go and steal some bones from the neighbour's garden, she’s suddenly very interested! Anyway, if anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it, as I’m getting a bit worried. Have a lovely day!😌

Your dog doesn't want to go for walks anymore, but it might just be that she's in pain or feeling some discomfort! Spaying is a common procedure, but it's still quite a major operation for a dog. She just wants to eat what she fancies, and you’re probably fussing over her – I’m not judging as I’m exactly the same, but she knows it and is taking full advantage! Treats are always better than dry food! When she’s hungry enough, she’ll eat her kibble! As for the dry food, I agree with @Jopetitpointer123; Friskies really isn't good for dogs. Their adverts make me laugh because they’re so misleading. There are more cereals than meat in them – in fact, there’s hardly any meat at all. Here is a link that explains how to choose the best dry food for your dog: http://nosamisleschiens.fr/comment-choisir-les-meilleures-croquettes-pour-son-chien/

You should absolutely avoid supermarket dry food, and that goes for so-called 'premium' brands like Royal Canin and Pro Plan too. The only ones that aren't quite as bad are grain-free options; the two best brands are Orijen and Power of Nature Meadowland Mix. Otherwise, you should look into BARF or raw feeding, which can cost next to nothing if you find the right suppliers.

No wonder she doesn’t want her dry food; she’s not a chicken (even for chickens, grains aren’t good for them) but a carnivore that eats meat, bones and offal.

Plus, she’s eating her chews well 👌 Friskies is the absolute worst; rice is really bad for dogs. Change their dry food immediately—has no one ever told you how dangerous Friskies is? (whole grains 63%), meat and animal derivatives (8%*), derivatives of vegetable origin, oils and fats, vegetable protein extracts, minerals, vegetables (0.08% vegetable powder equivalent to 0.5% vegetables). Cereals (really bad for dogs) Animal derivatives (hooves, feathers, udders, beaks, etc.) As for the rest, the ingredients are rubbish; you’re slowly killing your dog with this kibble.

First of all, stop giving her treats! She’ll soon realise that if she refuses her bowl, she’ll get goodies instead ;) Just leave her food out for her. Alternatively, try soaking her dry food in warm water to make it more appetising, or add a little bit of stock. A healthy dog won’t starve itself. Let her manage for herself at first. What are you feeding her? You might want to consider changing brands if this persists. I’ve tried soaking her dry food in water, but she would only eat them one by one and she didn’t want any more after swallowing about ten of them...

Are you giving her rawhide chews? They’re really bad and dangerous http://www.syntonieanimale.com/res/site62148/res623245_OsCuirBrutMortelPourVotreChien.pdf

What dry food are you feeding her?

I don't give her bones. She’s on Friskies dry food and rice. She has a bit of rice every now and then.

I think the best advice is just to ask your vet. You’ll feel so much better for it. My cat was spayed because she was coming into heat far too often and it was really intense. Then, just two days later, there she was in heat all over again. I read loads of horror stories online and after a week I finally decided to go back to the vet. I got my answer straight away and I’ve stopped trawling through every forum now. Just go in tomorrow or give them a ring—it’ll be much better for both of you.

First of all, stop giving her treats! She’ll quickly realise that if she turns her nose up at her bowl, she’ll get goodies instead ;) Just leave her food out for her. Alternatively, try soaking the dry food in some warm water to make it more appealing, or add a little bit of broth. A healthy dog won't let themselves starve. Let her manage for a bit at first. What are you feeding her at the moment? You might want to consider switching brands if it carries on.

Could she also have a problem with her teeth?

I don’t think so. I’ve had her for a month now (she’s from the RSPCA) and when we first went to the vet, he didn’t mention anything about dental issues. Plus, she’s perfectly happy eating chew bones 👌
