Hi everyone

Since yesterday, my dog Princess has had a really swollen stomach and hasn't stopped drinking, but she won't eat anything. She's peeing very often, about every 30 minutes, but since this started she hasn't done a poo at all. She doesn't seem to be in pain except when she’s lying on her tummy. I’m really worried and don’t know what’s wrong with her, can you help me please? Thanks in advance 😐

That’s a bit of a shocking diagnosis...!?! And the treatment... just painkillers? Any advice on diet or how to handle the transition...?

I’d definitely get a second opinion if I were you. Just because a dog is older doesn’t mean they shouldn’t carry out further investigations...

As for changing dry food, for the sake of any dog’s health, you need to do it over a long period by mixing the two brands. Gradually add the new food to the old one over about three weeks until you’ve switched over completely.

Thanks @Jador I took my dog to the vet this morning but he said it's because she’s old and hasn't handled the change in dry food my mum made very well. But since this morning she’s been crying more and more, though she hasn't been sick. She mostly cries when we look at her—is it possible she’s doing it on purpose just to get more attention?

This is an emergency, you need a vet. It’s either a urinary infection that’s spread to the kidneys, or a bowel obstruction.

A bloated tummy is also a sign of gastric torsion (bloat), which is fatal within 4 hours. Otherwise, it could be a twisted bowel, which leads to a blockage. In these cases, they often end up vomiting faeces because—well, I won't paint you a picture—but if it can’t come out the back end...

But go, quickly, get to a vet!
