My dog ate some rotten meat

Hi everyone,

On Thursday, I took my dog out for a run.

I saw her lingering over something and went to check it out straight away.

She was eating what I think was meat, but it looked really dodgy.

Some sort of dark brown mince with a foul smell, covered in mould and basically decomposing. I moved her away and covered the "meat" so she couldn't get back to it.

But then she went and ate something else rotten. I've no idea what it was. A big pile of thick, brown "liquid" with mould and loads of beetles—it was absolutely revolting. I put her back on the lead and we went home.

I'm terrified she's caught something. Should I be worried? Do I need to see a vet? Should I put her on a different diet? Any advice on what to do, please?

Hi there, What your dog has eaten is risky; rotten or mouldy meat can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, bacterial infections or parasites. Keep a close eye on her over the next 24 to 48 hours for signs like vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, a fever or abdominal pain. If any of these symptoms show up, contact your vet immediately. Even if she seems fine, it’s worth giving them a ring for some advice. Make sure she has access to healthy, balanced food. Best regards, Paul

My medium-sized dog has regularly eaten meat that’s gone off, and it’s never been an issue. He’s 15 and a half now and, aside from his arthritis, he’s doing really well. Jacques

Even if she’s vaccinated, if she’s swallowed something spoiled, there’s still a risk of poisoning and you can’t be sure how her system will react. How long after the incident was it before she ate again? In the meantime, keep an eye on her temperature—if it’s too low, that’s not a good sign either—and check her stools as well. Without wanting to worry you too much, do monitor her general behaviour closely and don’t hesitate to see a vet. Even if it’s just for peace of mind, it might be worth asking for a blood test if you’re concerned about your little girl. Keep us updated...

Personally, I’d have kept her off food for a bit. She might have an upset tummy if she’s acting a bit withdrawn.

She is indeed fully up to date with all her jabs. I’ve found her to be much quieter than usual and more distant with me. She hasn’t had any diarrhoea or vomiting. Her temperature is 37.9. Anyway, she has eaten since then, and she’s eating as much as she normally does.

Hi there, Just keep an eye on her for any diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or anything else out of the ordinary. If she seems fine, there's no need to panic, but if she does show symptoms, get her to the vet straight away... It would be a good idea to worm her soon though, just in case...

It’s been a while since Thursday, hasn't it? Has she been sick since then? Does she have a temperature? Does she seem lethargic to you? To be on the safe side, I would have seen a vet if I were in your shoes... because you clearly have no idea what it was, and it could be quite serious for her and might not show up until several days later. You’re asking for advice, so that’s mine at least. Keep us posted and do whatever you think is best. One last thing—has she eaten anything since she’s been home?

Hi, If she’s had all her vaccinations, I don’t think you need to worry too much. Just make sure she has plenty of water and keep an eye on her behaviour. If you notice she has diarrhoea, starts vomiting, or if she’s just not herself, get her straight to the vet.
