My dog ate a dead rabbit, what should I do?

Hi everyone,

As mentioned in the title, my dog (a Pomeranian x Jack Russell cross) ate my pet rabbit, which died about a month ago from unknown causes... We had buried it quite deep in the garden with a small rock on top; I have no idea how she managed to dig it up... Given the lockdown situation, my local vet is closed. I’m really worried because I don’t want her to catch anything.

Has anyone else been through this? Do you have any advice?

Thanks in advance

Hi there, That’s great news! If you still want to give her some apple cider vinegar to help “cleanse” her system a bit more, that would be a good idea. Thanks for the update, Maelles – you must be feeling much more relieved now. Give your little girl some cuddles from me!

Taking into account that normal digestion usually takes between 5 and 16 hours, you'll be able to keep an eye on her stools...

For her meals tomorrow, you could split her food into 3 portions... depending on her diet...

That will give her digestive system a bit of a rest...

Have a good night with your little one.

    See you tomorrow

    Thanks for your help

No sign of any bone or blood

Yes, same here, I’ve put his bed next to my own, and everything went well last night. I’m going to keep doing that for a bit longer just to be sure everything is okay

This is about apple cider vinegar, if you happen to have some in your kitchen.

Half a teaspoon in her food bowl...

It will act as a broad-spectrum aid for her digestion and help protect her system...

Regarding the vomiting (no streaks of blood or bone shards, I hope?)

I hope she manages to get a good night's sleep...

Speak soon to see how she’s doing.

She’s been sick twice this morning but nothing since then, and she's running around the garden quite happily.

Fingers crossed everything goes well 🤞🏽

I hope she doesn't get ill as well...

If you're in any doubt, keep her close to you tonight so you can keep a proper eye on her.

Tomorrow you'll see how she's doing (her digestion and general energy) to see if she needs a trip to the vet...

It’s been 18 hours now... how is she behaving?

I would have been much more worried if your dog had eaten some carrion, like a wild boar carcass, or something unidentified.

    Hi there,

Thanks for your reply, I’ll give that a go. Luckily she didn’t eat the whole thing...

I’ve actually found the remains; I’m not too cross with her, I’m just worried she might pick something up. She has a nasty habit of eating anything she finds anyway, and it’s already landed us a trip to the emergency vet once before. I hope everything will be alright.

Thanks for your advice anyway, thank you.

    Hi

Your dog should be able to digest it without too much diarrhoea; if you have any activated charcoal, you could give her some?

    About half a teaspoon...

And if there's any vomiting, some liquid antacid (the human kind) – same dose...

If you don't have that, a teaspoon of cooking oil (olive or others, but not peanut oil) in her food bowl...

Did you find any remains of your rabbit, or did she devour the whole thing?

For now, keep an eye on her for any vomiting, diarrhoea, or potentially a fever, etc.

Dogs on raw or BARF diets eat rabbit, and their digestive systems are used to it.

As for meat they bury or meaty bones, they can stay there for a long time before they dig them up again...

I'm so sorry about your rabbit's grave.

Don't be too cross with your dog; the scent would have been a massive temptation...

Bangdji (your dogs were lucky, I’m always very wary because you never know if mice or voles have eaten any rat poison...)

If she seems lethargic tomorrow (or if her tummy is rumbling), take her to the vet.

    And a good worming treatment...

When I buried my rabbits, I used a metal biscuit tin, and after a few years, the remains had returned to the earth... and the tin was thrown away.

Hi there, My neighbours' dogs once got into my garden and dug up my cat, who had been buried for about six weeks, and ate it. I think they were only a little bit sick afterwards, but two days later they were running around their garden as if nothing had happened. Back when my cats used to bring home dead mice, my dogs would eat them if I didn't get to them fast enough. They would sometimes be a bit sick, but that was about it. If I were you, I’d keep a close eye on things, but I wouldn’t be too worried.
