Looking for advice on cruciate ligament surgery

Evening everyone, Cortex got injured this morning (I’ve seen two different vets just to be sure) but it is what it is: a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left knee. The first vet told me it would take 4 to 8 months of rehab, whereas the second says the dog should have recovered well within 3 months. The prices are also worlds apart; one quoted around £850, the other about £350 (money isn’t an issue). In both cases, they told me that no matter what happens, Cortex will develop arthritis and the joint will become painful as he gets older.

I’d like to know if any of you have dealt with this kind of setback before. How did the surgery go? Was the recovery good? Is there anything we can do to make sure he doesn't suffer too much later on?

I’m so worried about Cortex (he’s on anti-inflammatories until the operation, which is scheduled for Monday at 8:45 am). I still don't know which vet to go with, but since both have given me an appointment, I need to cancel one of them...

I’m completely lost 😞

Thanks Jazz17 for getting back to me. The second vet explained the whole procedure (he even drew a diagram for me so I could understand); he really took his time. That’s compared to this morning, which felt a bit rushed – but then one was a veterinary clinic and the other a country vet. I have to keep him on strict crate rest (so I’ve bought a crate to keep him quiet). He’s really struggling to get around, poor lad.

I’m so glad to hear your little girl has made a good recovery. It gives me hope for Cortex.

Evening, I can’t really help you with information on cruciate ligament surgery, but my little dog had to have an operation on her kneecap when she was eighteen months old (a congenital condition that caused recurring dislocations and an intermittent limp), and it all went really well. She’s been full of beans ever since! Mind you, the surgery was quite pricey (it cost over £900). As for arthritis, my vet told me there was a high risk if things got worse (without the surgery), but the risk is much lower with the op, which is why it was worth going ahead with it...

I know proveto junior posts here sometimes, so if you have any information on this operation and the recovery, especially for a young dog, I’d be really grateful. Cortex is only 8 months old 😢
