Jack Russell cross Staffy

Hi everyone.

First of all, I hope you're all having a lovely festive season.

I’m after a bit of advice.

A friend wants to give me her puppy because she doesn't have the time to look after it (it was a gift from her sisters). It’s a Jack Russell cross Staffy, and I don’t really know much about what their temperament is like.

We live in a flat and have a one-year-old baby.

Do you think this will be an issue?

I’m giving it a lot of thought because I don’t want to take the pup on if I’m not 100% sure. I was originally planning on getting a Bulldog, so it’s a completely different kettle of fish.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Have a good day.

Hi, I'm not sure if you still have him or not, but he was actually my dog. My family gave him away while I was over in Spain, and when I got back he was gone. I had no contact details or any way of finding out where he’d ended up. In this photo he was already 2 years old. He’s a Jack Russell cross, and his dad was an American Staffy cross; they were my two dogs, so I was there when he was born and I miss him terribly. Since he’s been gone, I haven't been able to bring myself to get another dog. Would it be possible to just let me know if he’s doing okay? Thanks in advance, have a good day. Clément Hanzé

Hi there, excuse me, do you have any updates on this dog by any chance? I’d be more than happy to adopt him or help out in any way possible. If you could send me a private message or reply to this post, that would be brilliant. I can explain everything in more detail then. Best wishes and have a lovely day.

Hi, I was looking for your opinion. Someone is rehoming a one-year-old dog, but she isn’t microchipped, so there is no real proof of her breed. They say she’s a Staffy cross Jack Russell 🤔. I don’t have a licence for restricted breeds, so I’d like your advice. I’ve attached a photo of the dog. Best regards. Legally, every dog must be microchipped before being sold or rehomed. It is the legal obligation of the person giving the dog away to ensure this is done. Also, looking at the photo of the little girl, it’s hard to say for sure whether or not she would be classified as a restricted breed. Only a vet assessment can determine if she is 'typed' or not. There is nothing stopping you from adopting her, but you must keep in mind that if she is classified as a 'banned type', you will have to pay the costs involved in staying legal (she must be microchipped as a matter of course anyway). You’ll need to consider things like third-party insurance, the assessment, vaccinations... plus the constraints such as registering her with the local council, mandatory neutering, and the requirement for her to be on a lead and muzzled in public places. Don’t rush into this lightly!

Hi everyone, I wanted to get your advice. Someone is rehoming a one-year-old dog, but she hasn't been microchipped, so there’s no official proof of her breed. Hi everyone, I wanted to get your thoughts. Someone is rehoming a one-year-old dog, but she isn’t microchipped, so there’s no real proof of her breed. The owner says she’s a Staffy cross Jack Russell 🤔. I’m a bit worried about the laws on banned breeds and wouldn't want to get into any trouble, so I’d appreciate your opinions. I totally agree about how overcrowded the shelters are! Especially since most of the Pitties that end up in the pound will be put down... :'( But until a breed assessment is actually carried out, the dog won't be classed as a banned type! What’s written in the vaccination record doesn't have any legal standing at all!!

Yes, but a breed assessment is only possible once they reach a certain age. So until then, whatever is written on the paperwork is what counts. In any case, it’s pretty irresponsible to breed a litter with those two breeds... we’ve got more than enough dogs in rescue centres as it is :( Plus, if the Staffy (father or mother) isn’t KC registered, they should have been neutered or spayed. So breeding them isn't allowed.

The dog won’t necessarily be classed as Category 1! He’d need to have a morphological assessment first! Nothing proves whether he’s a pit bull or not, other than his vaccination record!! Just a reminder that in France, the term ‘pit bull’ doesn’t refer to a breed, but rather to a specific physical type!!!

Just a heads-up: if the puppy’s paperwork says 'Jack Russell cross Staffy' (or Jack Russell x Staffy), then they are classified as Category 1. This means these pups are illegal to sell or even give away for free. **Prohibitions** - It is illegal to buy, sell, gift, or import these dogs into the country. Anyone who took ownership of an 'attack dog' before the 2010 dangerous dog regulations were introduced must hold an ownership permit. If the dog is under 8 months old, a temporary permit is issued. - They are banned from public transport, public places, and any premises open to the public, except for the public highway. - They are not allowed to stay in the communal areas of blocks of flats. **Requirements** - They must be neutered (both males and females), and you must have a certificate from your vet to prove it. - They must be muzzled and kept on a lead by an adult when out on the street or in the communal areas of blocks of flats. - You must have an ID card issued by the Kennel Club or the national pet registration database.

Do you think you'll have enough time to dedicate to training this puppy?

There's a good chance they'll be a real live wire, so you'll definitely need to be able to keep up!
